Had the honour of attending the Independence Day celebrations for the Republic of Zimbabwe at Maphisa Stadium yesterday. H.E. President Emmerson Mnangagwa @edmnangagwa led the nation in commemorating its 46th Independence Day, marking freedom from British rule on 18 April 1980. Under the theme “Zim@46 – Consolidating Independence Gains Through Unity and Development Towards Vision 2030,”the main celebrations were held in Matebeleland South, alongside parallel events across the country. Despite heavy rains, thousands of Zimbabweans turned out for the national celebrations a powerful reminder that the spirit of independence remains strong. Happy 46th Independence Day, Zimbabwe.

Discussions emphasized the need to move beyond traditional aid towards investment-driven partnerships, harness opportunities in climate action and green financing, and leverage the demographic complementarities between Africa’s youthful population and France’s ageing society.

H.E. Amb. @PaulBBarets and I co-hosted a Kenya–France tea/coffee session in Harare for the African Group of Ambassadors, as part of the build-up to the Africa-France Summit 2026 scheduled for 11th–12th May 2026 in Nairobi. The engagement provided an opportunity to outline the roadmap towards the Summit and exchange views on how Africa and France can deepen cooperation through practical and mutually beneficial partnerships. A key highlight was France’s support for a stronger African voice in global governance, including advocacy for two permanent African seats at the United Nations Security Council a recognition of Africa’s central role in global peace and security. We also reflected on France’s significant footprint on the continent, with investments estimated at €65 billion, and a vibrant African diaspora of over 7 million people in France, underscoring the deep and growing ties between our regions.

In my remarks, I underscored Kenya’s expectations as co-host. We are championing youth driven, practical economic solutions and deeper economic cooperation that fosters shared prosperity, builds resilience, and unlocks talent. The Summit presents a critical opportunity to shift global partnerships from aid to investment, while advancing sustainability, job creation, climate action, and institutional support.

Earlier yesterday, our Kenya Mission, in partnership with the French Embassy in Harare, co-hosted a media and press briefing ahead of the Africa-France Summit (AFRICA FORWARD), set to take place on 11th–12th May 2026 in Nairobi. The French Ambassador to Zimbabwe highlighted the Summit’s core objectives: strengthening Africa–France collaboration to address global challenges, expanding partnerships across the continent, unlocking investment opportunities, and celebrating the dynamic ties between Africa and France through inclusive participation from leaders and business communities to youth, creatives, civil society, and the diaspora.

Yesterday, we participated in sessions at the ongoing 19th Ambassadors and High Commissioners’ Conference, covering climate diplomacy, green industrialisation, multilateralism, and Kenya’s strategic global positioning.Kenya is leveraging climate diplomacy to drive green industrialisation, with over 92% of grid power from clean energy, positioning the country as a global renewable energy leader. Through partnerships with the EU, US, and China, Kenya is advancing climate-positive growth powering manufacturing with green energy, attracting climate finance, and expanding carbon credit opportunities.Kenya also continues to pursue pragmatic multilateralism, strengthening its role as a hub for global governance, regional security, and economic diplomacy. By hosting UN agencies and actively engaging in EAC, COMESA, and IGAD, the country is advancing its national interests, supporting regional peace, and amplifying Africa’s voice globally in line with Vision 2030.

In guiding the deliberations of Ambassadors and High Commissioners, H.E. the President outlined four broad strategic imperatives: Kenya now engages with the world from a position of significantly greater strength than three years ago. The administration is making tangible progress toward achieving Universal Health Coverage, with over 30 million Kenyans registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA). The Government continues to make commendable strides in transforming Kenya into a first-world economy. Kenya remains firmly committed to its leadership role at regional, continental, and global levels.

As noted, Kenya aspires not only to attract investment but also to play a meaningful role in shaping the future globally. President Ruto highlighted that over the past three years, Kenya has made notable progress in implementing its national transformation agenda. He further pointed to the Government’s ambitious KSh 5 trillion development plan aimed at propelling the country toward a first-world economy.

Yesterday evening, I had the honour of attending a Welcome Cocktail Reception hosted by the @ForeignOfficeKE in celebration of Amb. @AmbMonicaJuma appointment to the United Nations, and to mark the opening of the 19th Ambassadors’ Conference. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, non-state actors, and development partners, creating a meaningful space for connection and reflection. In his remarks, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Dr. @MusaliaMudavadi, welcomed Dr. Juma’s appointment, noting that it reflects strong global confidence in Kenya’s leadership in multilateralism. He further highlighted the historic significance of her appointment, as she becomes only the second African to hold this prestigious position. The evening underscored Kenya’s growing influence on the global stage and celebrated a remarkable milestone in diplomatic leadership.

This timely and thought-provoking discussion comes as Kenya continues to position itself as a leader in AI across Africa. The country is making deliberate strides through the development of structured national strategies, promotion of private-sector innovation, and integration of AI across key economic sectors. A central theme of Kenya’s approach is the emphasis on building a “homegrown” AI ecosystem—one that leverages local talent and solutions to address uniquely Kenyan challenges. Among its ambitious goals is the creation of 1 million AI-powered jobs by 2030, signaling a strong commitment to inclusive digital transformation and economic growth.
