The very first thing people encounter about those types is restriction and fear around identity. If rejection is the core terror, then curation is the logical defense — you can’t reject the real me if I never show you the real me. Whatever gets rejected is just the mask, and the actual self stays protected behind the wall. But it’s a trap and more of a trap for them than it is for you. Allow me to explain. This is because if someone accepts the curated version, it doesn’t actually soothe the wound at the core of the toxic performance. They know that the nontoxic person didn’t actually choose them--the toxic person . They chose the toxic person's performance a straw man or artificial representative of sorts. Working from that premise, logic dictates whatever acceptance they were trying to extract by means of temptation and relational fraud can never actually land on their authentic self precisely because they have hidden their authentic self from the non-toxic target with the very performance. See the self imposed trap yet? Therefore, the hunger in them stays perpetually unfulfilled which is why they keep returning to you a principled person for a shot at the healing acceptance. But their fear of rejection keeps them from the honesty necessary to obtain it. So, to attempt to deny and defy that inalienable reality, that logical inevitability, in order to do so they have to go find the next person to try it on. On the flip side, if someone rejects the curated version — like the non-toxic eventually does — it confirms the fear of the toxic person even though what was rejected wasn’t even real. Either way their own choice to defraud their prey for itself inevitably means the wounded soul at the back of the demonically wounded drama they attempt to weaponize to conscript your love by chicanery or force, never actually gets the data it actually answers the question or that its needs to prove its worth, which all narcissists by definition are subconsciously seeking; which is this: Is the real version of me actually lovable? The choice to curate the persona and thereby conceals their kinks& flaws prevents the experiment to know with certainty if the real self is lovable despite these from ever genuinely being ran.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Perhaps this is because they sense their inability to manage their destructive appetites if openly expressed for what they actually reflect would very likely lead to rejection at least in persons that have some respect for a principle. Moreover, there is either A: No real genuine desire at the core of who they are concealed behind the artifice to offer faithfulness or loyalty in return themselves. Or B: At some level of their awareness they know the disgust it invokes in others by uncritically yielding to its wounded lust and hunger for attention sexual or otherwise that its consumed by, likely prevents it from ever actually genuinely feeling chosen. Afterall, some part of them knows nobody in their heart of hearts really wants that. Neither the toxic person's option A nor option B allows for fidelity nor the relational discipline required for it further ensuring repeated rejection. Unwilling to surrender to a truth that would free it, its has only option C left play only with those who will accept destructiveness & artifice. Neither A, B, or C, allows fulfillment of the thirst. But, option C allows for the illusion of it. In short, the reality is that what they both crave and (need genuine acceptance and fidelity) is what at the same tome their very nature disqualifies them for. That's a type of psychic hell that knowingly or unknowingly, they have condemned themselves to. At the root of that tangled mess of distortion the driver is that the wounded ego wants control more than liberation because it mistakenly believes that defying truth is the key to it. God has declared it is not. Therefore the result of their gambit is a psycho-emotional hell of their own knowing or unknowing making.
