Today, we honor the extraordinary heroes who were awarded our nation’s highest military honor—the Medal of Honor—through their bravery and sacrifice. At Bath Iron Works, we are proud to build ships named after Medal of Honor recipients, like the USS John Basilone (DDG 122), USS Harvey C. Barnum, Jr. (DDG 124), and the future USS Thomas G. Kelley (DDG 140). These vessels not only represent cutting-edge engineering and maritime excellence but also serve as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of those who sacrificed for our freedom.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀 Check out the lucky shamrocks worn by P10 Mariah Pennell, Y02 Todd McLaughlin, E02 Dan Snyder, and O04 Jessiah Carlson, who work on Hull 524, the future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127). Mariah, Todd, Dan and Jessiah are part of the team driving the ship to be ready for trials later this spring. The ship's Sponsors, Patrick Gallagher’s sisters, continued their annual tradition of sending shamrocks from Ireland for our shipbuilders. Thank you Pauline, Rosemarie and Teresa!

Did You Know? 💭 USNS Robert E. Peary is a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship built in San Diego by our sister shipyard, NASSCO. The ship is the fourth Navy ship to be named for Maine resident and Bowdoin College graduate Rear Adm. Robert E. Peary, who was the first man to reach the North Pole. The ship was launched Oct. 27, 2007 but the christening in the name of the arctic explorer had to be delayed because of intense California wildfires that year that burned 1,500 homes and 972,000 acres. The ship was eventually christened by Peary’s great granddaughter, a Florida judge.

Did You Know? 💭 Welding is hot…really hot. That’s a key reason why welders and the trades that work around them have to take important safety precautions, including proper removal of coatings above, below, in front and behind a welding location. A welding arc is rated at 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit and for Department 50 mechanics running plasma, the plasma arc is rated at 50,000 degrees. For context, the surface of the sun is about 10,000 degrees.

Applications are OPEN for the BIW Apprentice School! ⚓ The BIW Apprentice School combines hands-on shipbuilding experience with a nationally respected academic foundation through its partnership with Maine Maritime Academy. This unique collaboration allows apprentices to pursue a college-level education while developing in-demand trade skills, all within a paid, real-world work environment. Most apprentices complete an 8,000-hour apprenticeship – approximately four years – in one of the listed craft areas. This extensive, hands-on training is paired with a 60-credit college-level academic curriculum that strengthens technical knowledge in shipbuilding disciplines. Fair Winds and Following Seas! Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124) sailed away from BIW Wednesday, March 4, beginning its journey to Norfolk, Virginia, where it will be commissioned into the U.S. Navy fleet next month. The ship’s 9,500 tons of steel and technology slid quietly out from Pier 3 and into the channel at 11:45 a.m. with the crew of the Navy’s newest destroyer dressing the rails. Thousands of shipbuilders who helped build her proudly watched the latest Bath-built Arleigh Burke-class destroyer head down the Kennebec. Charge on DDG 124! Bath Built is Best Built.

Did You Know? 💭 You may have heard a loud horn reverberating around land level on February 18. That was the horn on Hull 523, Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124). Navy destroyer horns are loud, typically producing sound levels between 130 and 143 decibels (dB), which is louder than a jet engine taking off, according to the U.S. Navy. Often referred to as the ship's whistle, they are designed for safety, with an audibility range of over two nautical miles to cut through wind, rain, and heavy machinery noise.
