In my opinion, the gap between D2 and D3 is nowhere near as wide as the gap between D2 and FBS. I’d argue the average D2 and D3 programs can play a competitive game against each other. The real difference isn’t talent. It’s how the money works. D2 schools can offer athletic and academic aid. D3 schools can only offer academic aid. And here’s where families get surprised. You can get a $30k academic scholarship at a D3 and still owe $40k out of pocket because tuition is so high. At D2, you might get $10k in athletic aid and only owe $20k out of pocket. Numbers vary everywhere, but I’ve seen kids land huge academic packages and still pay a ton. The main point is simple. Competition is often similar. The money is just structured very differently. Are families choosing levels based on football, or misunderstanding the math?
