NEW: Nigel Farage is considering shutting down the OBR if Reform wins the next general election. He tells @Telegraph the budget watchdog has reached such a position of influence that it is effectively “dictating policy”. Scrapping the OBR would be the biggest overhaul of independent scrutiny over the Government’s taxation and spending plans in a generation. Reform is currently more than 10 points clear of rivals in average opinion polls and has lead since April 2025. Farage: “With the OBR I worry once again that we have a Blairite-style quango effectively dictating to elected politicians what they should or should not do. “It seems that in too many areas of our public life the power has moved to judges and quangos and not the government the people choose.” He added: “We have to discuss whether we would be better off without the OBR. I am giving that very serious thought.” This is a moment of uncertainty for the OBR, without a chairman after Richard Hughes quit following the leaking of its forecast 45mins before the last Budget. Increasingly figures on the Left are joining those on the Right questioning the degree to which the OBR’s 5th year forecast is shaping Treasury policy. But this also potentially opens up Farage to attacks over fiscal responsibility. Downing Street insiders believe Reform is vulnerable on economic competence.
