When the folks who created DORA and SPACE publish an interesting new framework: I pay attention. It was great to interview @margaretstorey, @nicolefv, @mgreiler & @abinoda and to ask Nicole the question that's on the mind of many folks using/considering DORA. Read it here:
The Pragmatic Engineer@Pragmatic_Eng

The creators behind the DORA and SPACE frameworks published a new developer productivity framework: The three dimensions of DevEx. Why a new framework? What is the thinking behind it? An interview with @abinoda, @margaretstorey, @nicolefv & @mgreiler: newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/developer-pr…

So cool that @nicolefv joined @DeveloperXM as a strategic advisor! When I talked with @abinoda on what they are building, I could not shake the feeling that finally this is a direction that can actually make high-performing teams work even better. Love the team coming together!

Looking for great questions to ask on an Internal Developer Experience survey. Looking for themes around ability to ship, infrastructure and organization – or if there's better themes to focus on, I'm open to suggestions too! /cc @techgirl1908 @cirpo @MissAmaraKay @sarah_edo

Developer productivity goes beyond a single number. Read up on SPACE which is a good start queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=… I'm an advisor at @DeveloperXM because it's the first startup that - finally! - approaches this problem space in a way that helps high-performing teams get better.

I recently joined @abinoda on the Engineering Enablement podcast to share how we work at the Financial Times. One major theme was how we support @lifeatFT 's autonomous engineering teams. Listen to the full episode here: getdx.com/podcast/engine…

Metrics from GitHub and JIRA can't tell you how productive an engineering team is.

@callmeed Yeah, that makes a ton of sense. I’ve worked in a couple of startups where having it seemed to open a lot of doors, but because of having that functionality early I never thought about/understood how it could become a limiting factor without it. Thanks for sharing @callmeed!

@GJunggren I know of one company that cannot do SSO/SAML due to limitations of their product–they flat out told me "yeah, we lose a lot of business because of this"

Honestly I think if you have a b2b saas product, just adding SSO/SAML support would probably make you a lot of money in a relatively short amount of time

@997unix @carlcoryell @erikrogneby Along the lines that 2x improvement capacity exists (which I wholly agree with), what would you say is more difficult - effectively identifying what impediments exist and which ones to prioritize, or systematically finding solutions and actioning them?

@carlcoryell @erikrogneby The magic wand starts with the wielder. Which leader is going to bet their badge that a meaningful, 2x feature increase is valuable and possible? Absent that leader, the org will stay on its (usually eroding) baseline.

Seeing tweets about demand for programmers and thinking, "what about making existing teams more productive?" The majority of software development teams in the US probably have at least 2x of improvement capacity available, if management can create the context.

@Raphael_A_Bauer @patkua Hard to normalize across teams with different workflows. There is always noise in the data from things like outliers, vacation time, non work hours, etc. And a big one is that they will always require context to be useful.

A question I hear a lot from engineering manager is, "How should I measure my software teams?" My initial answer, "I think you're asking the wrong question." Why? 👇

@Raphael_A_Bauer @patkua The research methodology in Accelerate used surveys, opposed to trying to measure those things by connecting to systems and extracting + processing metadata. In my experience, even measuring something like lead time in a system-based way has important limitations.
