@WalkableCityBoy All the time! So many housing problems could be solved by replacing 2-3 of the ridiculous 5-lane city streets and two of the 4-lane wide side street I live on with affordable apartments. Instead SLO has invested in sprawlmania and unsafe bike lanes.

@phillbjones I 100% agree about the UI/UX issue - I assume automation = better author experience until I tried it myself. Now I’d love to just be able to share a Google doc with an editor 😂

I just submitted an article to a journal. I don't do it all that often, but every time I do, I'm shocked at how difficult and time consuming the process is.

@fungi_lover I think a boycott of mega profit publishing companies would be effective if everyone participated. But they won’t because current academia rewards individuals. Soft boycotting alternative: preferentially review elsewhere, don’t publish with these companies, & cite other journals

There is a lot of latitude in these projects in terms of whether you take a more soil/microbe/chemistry/outreach/ecology perspective but the ability to self-start, work collaboratively, and finish things (with a supportive and talented advisor) is super important.

Each place has different benefits (my first job I paid loads for health insurance bc the college was bankrupt. At cal poly there is mandatory pension investment in unethical places)
