Helping make GPUs faster, hobby semicon/FPGAs and too much Minecraft. Opinions are my own, nowadays I mostly rant. Also on https://t.co/dulcLVhvfX

Well, here goes nothing, sometimes to move forward you have to leave some things behind. From now on I will no longer be making chip annotations and will only be contributing to media in limited capacity. Minecraft testing TBD, but for now on hold too. Thank you all! 😉

@gmillers404 It is using HW decode, confirmed by observed GPU decoder usage. Ryzen AI 7 350 can HW decode anything YT serves currently, likewise with the 5090 in the desktop where YouTube playback uses as much CPU as a light game.
Nemez@GPUsAreMagic

On the desktop it is a bit easier to see... Same behavior in MS Edge, so for once this isn't a Firefox bug. Using as much CPU to playback a video (resolution, FPS and codec doesn't seem to matter) as Minecraft pushing 240 FPS with max render distance, absurd.

@GPUsAreMagic Maybe it's giving you av1 for a device that doesn't support hardware decode for it. Happens to my Ryzen 5000 series laptop as well. I used enhanced-h264ify to disable av1 and fallback on vp9

Seems like that supposed YouTube memory leak bug (one of very many if anything) isn't the only thing. I'm seeing a CPU core almost constantly near full boost while playing back a video. 22W battery drain vs the more expected 5W, can get it down to 8W with battery saver at least.

For what its worth... @TeamYouTube there is some sort of bug since a few days ago that hogs CPU resources - 1 thread at high load. Seems to go away after a while if I keep a short video on loop, but it doesn't seem to be tied to decoding the buffered bitstream.

And yes it is using hardware decoding on the GPU.

3GHz frequency cap does wonders to misbehaving applications... not exactly a thing a more efficient SoC (Apple/Qualcomm) would fix since it would also be forced to high clocks where the efficiency advantage quickly diminishes. We still need properly written programs! 😑

The vibecoded @nvidia GPU drivers shall continue until users are unable to display an image. Oh I guess we are already at that point.

@amhayes8 @HardwareUnboxed It's just the usual AMD thing of newer AGESA breaking it randomly, will likely get fixed eventually. Seems like AM5 EPYC 4004/4005 are experiencing the same issues, so it isn't really anything targeted at Ryzen specifically.

@HardwareUnboxed Wait, the Level 1 forums have people reporting that they did have ECC on at least ASRock and some Gigabyte boards, does the latest BIOS actually brick ECC?

Just a little FYI. I've tested every single X870/X870E motherboard (update video very soon) and spoiler none support ECC memory with the latest BIOS. So who is using the 9950X3D in a professional setting? I suspect not many.
Anton Kovalenko@0xE1

@HardwareUnboxed They have non-ECC processor and "professional" in single sentence

@GPUsAreMagic I've always said you're special, the kind of special that would buy the 9950X3D2.

re: 9950X3D2 Paper Launch Edition - regional issues it seems, oh well
Nemez@GPUsAreMagic

@HardwareUnboxed Yeah checking again the 9950X3D2 is in quite a few stores now, amusingly still missing in the usual major ones LOL Maybe if it pops up on Alza tomorrow I may be tempted, the price is insane, but not insane enough to completely make me say no 😂

@GPUsAreMagic Skill issue :P haha nah in all seriousness that just sounds like a regional issue. There are plenty of these things. Basically every retailer here has them (Centre Com probably bought 1).

@HardwareUnboxed So good I can't buy a single one here without importing it from Germany 😂 First time in ages a Ryzen chip is just not even listed at any store here on launch day, even the WX Threadrippers generally are.

@KrisCheetah @Alzacz In the end it was the display. A firmware update (with no update notes about anything like this of course) fixed it. Now the last thing remaining in this cable/display saga is a rejected RMA for an optical cable that barely even holds in the port, so it drops signal all the time

@GPUsAreMagic @Alzacz In the grand scheme of things, the end user shouldn't ever need to spend that much money on a laptop's shitty HDMI implementation. Is your problem common with that laptop model? If not, maybe you could consider RMA?

Since the HDMI certification program is worthless - I'm sitting on a pile of HDMI 2.1 certified cables that don't work properly... Anyone got recommendations for known-good 3 meter 48Gbps cables?

Another update on the PTM7950 swap now that it settled in (Minecraft temps went down another 5c vs original post) AK Endfield CPU 95c -> 85c GPU 85c -> 83c (but 60W -> 70W, thus FPS +10-15%) Fans 5000 RPM -> 4100 RPM Tbh I expected lesser gains, I guess the hype is justified 😁
Nemez@GPUsAreMagic

Whatever crusty paste Asus used on my TUF A14 belongs back to rocks from the dawn of earth's formation. Repasted with PTM7950, iso-workload: GPU 80c -> 70c CPU 95c (TJmax bumping so not accurate) -> 82c. Amazing (yes the workload is Minecraft, single-thread hotspot goes crazy)

TL;DR that you can easily share around: If you have an NVIDIA GPU, use Vulkan. If you have an AMD or Intel GPU, use OpenGL.

Here are some benchmarks of the new Vulkan backend introduced in #Minecraft 26.2-snapshot-1 and how it compares to OpenGL. The results may be surprising to some of you 😁 Full article: nemez.net/posts/20260410…

@McAfeeDavid_AMD $899 would have been "a bit much but okay fine" if it launched a year ago. Really making me want to just wait for Zen 6 Dual Edition, assuming it will even be a product, but ugh 8 Cores is really getting a bit slow... hm
