Shocking: No Long-Term Fuel Duty Cut as Harris Says Economy Can Wait Speaking to reporters in Salthill, Galway today, the Tánaiste and finance minister said the Government plans to introduce a package of short-term measures instead. These will be finalised at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, amid ongoing rises in global oil prices triggered by geopolitical tensions. Harris emphasised that the Government's approach would be quicker, more effective, and targeted. He criticised Sinn Féin's plan for not addressing fuel poverty supports (such as the fuel allowance for vulnerable households) and stressed that any interventions should be temporary to allow flexibility as the situation evolves. "We can bring a financial resolution that's much more speedy, much more effective," he said. "Anything we do in the first instance should be for a short period of time."He noted Ireland's strong economic position enables targeted help, focusing on pump prices (where people feel "real anxiety" from rising car-filling costs), those at risk of fuel poverty (via home heating supports), and the haulage sector's economic pressures. The Tánaiste added that the Government is engaging with European partners and will adapt as needed, without "firing every bullet now." Fianna Fáil TD Shane Moynihan echoed this, urging a "timely" but sustainable response, as the crisis is only weeks old and long-term viability matters. Labour TD Marie Sherlock called the Government's delay "absolutely disgraceful," arguing a cost-of-living crisis already existed before recent events, with high gas/electricity bills, food prices up over 25% in four years, and families struggling weekly. Minister of State Robert Troy described the price surge as resulting from an unforeseen war, stressing a "considered" approach to targeted supports for businesses and individuals, while avoiding added inflation. He said the Government is "looking at every lever" and expects measures to be agreed by Tuesday.
