2 years ago today I was expelled from Congress. Since then I’ve been jailed, humiliated and tortured all because I made very poor choices in my past. My lesson? Do better and be better. BREAKING: A Chinese immigrant is found dead in ICE custody with his hands and feet bound in a “hog-tied" position and they’re insisting that it was suicide. There are no words for this horror… “It is truly mystifying how any detention facility can let someone leave their room, create three nooses and then hang themselves without anyone knowing,” said David B. Rankin, the attorney for the victim’s family. “What’s worse is the lack of mental health care which could have prevented this tragedy. Mr. Ge’s death represents a totally failure on the part of the GeoGroup and the DHS.” The 32-year-old Chaofeng Ge died on August 5th just four days after he was placed in ICE custody in Pennsylvania. The report from ICE — an agency that has proven itself to be habitually cruel and dishonest under Kristi Noem’s fascist leadership — states that agents discovered Ge with “a cloth ligature around his neck.” The autopsy stated that Ge had been tied with a bedsheet and was “hog-tied” with linens around his ankles and wrists. The medical examiner stated that there have been other incidents where individuals supposedly did similar things to themselves. Notably, Ge was assessed through the use of an interpreter on August 1st and stated that he had no medical or mental health issues that needed tending to. Just four days later he was found non-responsive in a shower stall and was pronounced dead 40 minutes later. “I am devasted by the loss of my brother and by the knowledge that he was suffering so greatly in that detention center,” said the deceased’s brother Yanfeng Ge. “He did not deserve to be treated that way. I want justice for my brother, answers as to how this could have happened, and accountability for those responsible for his death.” Newsweek reports that at least 15 immigrants have died so far in ICE facilities during Trump’s second term. Until these brutal practices end that number will just continue to rise. Ge’s family has fired a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security demanding answers about their loved one’s untimely death. They allege that ICE denied Ge proper mental healthcare. The most benign explanation for this death is suicide but even with the lack of defensive wounds, one simply cannot rule out the possibility of foul play given the dehumanizing manner in which Trump’s MAGA enforcers view migrants. Even if Ge did take his own life, it’s no less a tragedy. This young man did not need to be terrorized and imprisoned in inhumane conditions.
