WTF is Dia De Pixales 🧵
On December 14, 2022 the founder of the Ordinals Protocol, @rodarmor, inscribed an original piece of pixel art into the Bitcoin blockchain. The piece depicted a black and white skull that he had created himself. It became the first Ordinals inscription ever and was assigned inscription number #0.
It can be viewed here: ord.io/0
Yesterday (457 days later) with no warning Casey used parent-child provenance to inscribe a GIF that filtered through different pixel art skulls as a child of inscription 0.
The child can be viewed here: ord.io/64228106
Just now Casey inscribed eight more inscriptions as grandchildren of inscription 0. These are PNG files of pixel art skulls.
They can be viewed here: ord.io/?childrenOf=68…
Interestingly the child and grandchildren were all inscribed on sats with special names. It is unclear if there is a code or meaning behind them yet.
These nine skulls are collectively known as the Dia De Pixales collection which is original art by Casey that had appeared on his personal website before Ordinals was even released. Some have speculated that the entire inspiration for creating Ordinals was that he wanted to launch an NFT collection of his art but when he looked into doing it on Ethereum he strongly disliked many of the technical tradeoffs made by the ERC-721 standard.
What his exact plans are for these inscriptions is still unclear. What we do know is that this collection has the strongest provenance of any Ordinals collection likely ever.
