Given that the newsroom’s pre-layoff employment was 790 people, this reflects a purge of between 44 percent of the Post’s journalists at the low end and nearly HALF (47.5 percent) at the higher end.  Which is to say, the bloodbath was even bloodier than realized. End.

The @washingtonpost’s spiking of a news story about its mass layoffs, as reported in the @statusnews newsletter, isn’t just journalistic malpractice—it’s consumer fraud. The Post is about to make itself at least one-third less valuable to subscribers. It should tell them that.

It is astounding, and yet in keeping with Will Lewis's tenure leading the Washington Post, that he did not take part in today's announcement to the Post newsroom and has not offered a vision for the path forward.

PUB BROADCASTING FUNDING. For those following the PBS + NPR funding/Rep. Bacon debate - Dem. Rep. Scanlon just now pushed a vote restoring some funding for PBS stations in the Rules Committee. It failed on partisan lines 9-4. The committee could have and did not allow Bacon to bring an amendment to the floor, despite the promises he believed he had about that. As a side note, I get that coverage of this may seem naive, but it actually seems a perfect example of why some members have had problems with Speaker Johnson and what they believe are his promises (a source familiar tells me he never made a promise to Bacon). It also shows how Johnson is getting things done in a tough-margin Congress. Without Bacon's vote and sense of a promise - the rescissions would not have passed last year.

I've been following the great journalists of the @PGHGuild for years. Some of them I even worked along side as an intern, more than a decade ago as I was first getting into journalism. And I will follow them to whatever publication they build next.

TODAY: The @PittsburghPG lost again. This time as the U.S. 3rd Circuit Court rejected a request to rehear the case in which it ordered the PG to pay workers back for the costs it illegally passed onto us, & restore the contract. Even w/ the closure, the owners are on the hook.
