After watching the episode about #Sunsoft made by @dark1x I decided to make my own version of #Batman Return of Joker for the #MegaDrive. Of course, it could be much better if made by a real #pixelartist #pixelart. But I would have been happy to play this in the 90s.

Somente 1 paleta para o player, 1 para inimigos, e 1 para o BG, ainda tem 1 paleta inteira sobrando por que esse mapa só tem 1 plano. Mega drive mesmo usando só 48 cores ficou com um resultado interessante. Encerro por aqui meu estudo sobre metal slug.

I agree. Great question. I think a lot of what is special about the hit react / 'stun' timing and rhythmic cadence of the gun play in GE007 evolved from Virtua Cop (SEGA) (which was Martin Hollis' initial direction for the game)

@drdoak real game design question here: what inspired the goldeneye team to create such amazing hitstun on the enemies? western shooters even now don't have such fantastic feeling hitstun and I think it's the secret sauce of goldeneye.

#PCエンジン #pcengine #turbografx So I got my prototype logic working in Mesen for my VCE 2.0 "addon" for PCE. Access to the full 32k palette is there and working. Nothing too exciting to show off yet (I need to write some demo roms). Because full access to the YUV range, I also added a mode where the VCE takes a 512x240 image (10.74mhz dot clock - the fastest the VDC can run on a stock system) and interprets pixel pairs as 8bit index color. Technically, two pixels is 18bits of information (pixel bus 9bits), but I'm just pairing the 4bit LSbits of each pixel, and taking a pal number from one of them; 8bit index color with 4 palette options, 32k YUV. Being able to prototype out the logic with Lua, in Mesen, has helped so much. When it comes to implement this in an FPGA, I'll have mostly tested out all my design approaches. First pic: is a simple demo rom I made that uses some of the YUV palette to show 512 colors on screen (adaption of a different rom). Not that exciting. But proof of concept. You can start writing games with this as-is. I'll have more to show on this coming up. Second pic: This is my conversion to hi-color VCE image. It uses 512px mode pixels to make a 256px mode pixels by combining them (well, needs to be clipped a little bit). Used 4 palettes of 240 colors in 32k YUV. Yes, that VDC is doing ALL of that. It's the VCE that's just re-interpreting the pixel data from the VDC digital pixel bus. Just to note: this image is in converted format, just not in a rom yet - I'm still writing the conversion scripts for this stuff to get it into a rom. Just to be clear, the new "VCE 2.0" isn't adding any new graphics here. It's allowing access to the full 32k YUV range (that the original VCE already had, but blocked) - and is just reinterpreting the pixel data on the bus - the VDC still doing all the work. Again, huge shout out to Mesen and Lua support. Once it's all prototyped out, then being implementing it via small FPGA. But yeah, really nice to be able to see the results of the state logic.
