People need to understand that blackface isn’t defined only by intent, it’s defined by imagery and historical context. Blackface has always involved a non-Black person presenting a fully blackened face for performance, spectacle, or shock value. That’s exactly the visual being used here. Even if someone says it’s a “mask” or “art,” the result is still a Blackened face displayed on a public stage for entertainment. Given the history of minstrel shows and how Blackness was reduced to a costume, symbolism matters. You don’t get to ignore history just because you call something fashion or performance art. When an image recreates the same visual language that was historically used to dehumanize Black people, it’s reasonable to call that blackface — regardless of whether exaggerated features are present or not. Harmful imagery doesn’t require malicious intent to still be harmful.
