On his deathbed in 2021, he confessed to his family and begged his daughter to keep it secret. She made a podcast. Theodore John Conrad, a 20-year-old bank teller in Cleveland, Ohio, walked out of his bank with $215,000 in cash, equivalent to more than $1.8 million today, and disappeared. Inspired in part by the film The Thomas Crown Affair, Conrad carefully planned the theft and evaded authorities by assuming a new identity: Thomas Randele. For more than five decades, he lived an apparently ordinary life. He married, raised a family, worked as a golf professional and car salesman, and avoided the mistakes that often lead fugitives to capture. Despite being one of the longest-running unresolved bank theft cases in U.S. history, he was never arrested. In 2021, as he was dying of lung cancer, Conrad confessed his true identity to his family. Shortly afterward, U.S. Marshals confirmed that Thomas Randele and Theodore Conrad were the same person, finally closing a case that had remained open for 52 years. The story gained renewed attention when Conrad's daughter, Ashley Randele, shared the family secret through the podcast Smoke Screen: My Fugitive Dad. Conrad successfully evaded capture longer than many notorious fugitives.
