@summer_arcy @KernCMC @Mathgarden I agree 100%!! If they are connected to you, they will care about what you're teaching them. Teachers are responsible for growth mindset so connecting with students is key!

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Teachers need to reach students socially and emotionally because if they feel connected to the content they will be more motivated to complete and excel at it. They need to know that they can do math and that math can solve so many problems in real life.

Q4: Why is it so important that teachers meet/reach students intellectually, socially, and emotionally when teaching mathematics? What role do storytelling and the history of mathematics play in achieving this goal? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@KernCMC @Mathgarden It's important that teachers meet their students emotional and social needs when teaching math because students need to know that you can level with them. Students need to know that they can trust you and you can empathize with them when they reach that level of frustration.

@YessicaRasmuss1 @KernCMC @Mathgarden Family game nights are the best! My school did one and everyone had a blast! Teachers set up math games at every table, they also made copies of the games for parents to take home to play at their leisure. Parents got to learn how to play the games with their kids, it was so fun!

@KernCMC @Mathgarden This chapter is full of game ideas! It was the longest chapter as I tried some as I read! Imagine playing these games at home, for family game nights, and in the classroom? Quite literally, if we do this, Mathematics playgrounds will keep growing and growing

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Making math fun using games definitely encourages students to want to stay engaged. There's a "poke-dittion" game I play with my students. It's pokemon cards with numbers. Students place cards in the middle at the same time and the first one to add them together correctly wins.

Q3: What are some alternatives that educators and leaders can use to replace traditional grades? Why are these alternatives more useful in the creation of an education system that is both social and collaborative? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Teachers can use collaboration among students to enhance learning. Student conversation can inform instruction. Teachers can also use student portfolios as a method of grading to track progress in students' academics. Teachers can also give students more

@MrSmithBCSD @KernCMC @Mathgarden I love the idea of letting the students figure out for themselves where they may have gotten things mixed up. It's important as educators to guide self-perseverance instead of just giving them the correct answer.

@KernCMC @Mathgarden I believe it is important to implement positive scaffolding and encouragement along the process. As opposed to immediately correcting students during math work, we should be asking them how they arrived at that answer and allow them to discover the answer themselves.

Q3: How do we, as educators, engage in productive struggle? What can we do to ensure that our students experience productive struggle in a positive way that leads them to gain freedom, space, and curiosity? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@KernCMC @Mathgarden One of the best ways we can wake up the true love for mathematics at home and at school is to make math fun again. Playing board games are great opportunities to explore math while also teaching social skills (taking turns, how to accept not winning, patience, etc).

@HangingwithMrJ @KernCMC @WrightMath314 @Mathgarden Mancala was one of my most favorite childhood games that had math embedded in it. I had no idea that it involved counting and one-to-one correspondence. We would have mini tournaments within the family, some of my most treasured memories are centered around that game alone.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 @Mathgarden Speed, Uno, Mancala are all games I have played with students that disguise number sense learning, but also create memories. They love playing and return the next day asking to play those games. These create memories, especially if you teach them a game they will love!

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Games that can promote better mathematical memories for our students to play with friends and family is Uno, or chutes and ladders, monopoly, and yahtzee (which is also great for subitizing). #EDEL5200 #mathrecess
