@Cassand04578205 @KernCMC @Mathgarden Well said! Working with and understanding our students should be a primary goal from Day 1. Understanding their needs and letting them grow. Understanding that many students learn in different, unique ways. Good input!

@KernCMC @Mathgarden The big lesson is that we need to focus on the students instead of tests. Kids will learn through exploration and relationships. There's no need too give students endless summative assessments to CFU, this will only stress them out and give them anxiety about learning #MATH5200

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 @Mathgarden We can ensure mathematics continues to grow by encouraging creative thinking by allowing fun games that are not confined by limits. Games that can be played in any sequence allow for new experience for all players. #MathRecess

@KernCMC @Mathgarden After reading the "Grades are for Onions" chapter I was shocked that I had never really thought about grading on a curve, is just predetermining some of your students will fail. Mind blowing. This does not promote a positive learning environment.

Q2: Grades, rankings, & grading on the curve are traditions heavily embedded in the U.S. Are these practices useful when creating a positive learning environment where collaboration, growth, & productive struggle exist? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

Q3: What are some alternatives that educators and leaders can use to replace traditional grades? Why are these alternatives more useful in the creation of an education system that is both social and collaborative? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden

@Dominiq71162938 @KernCMC @Mathgarden In Dan Finkel’s Ted Talk, he stated that we should “nurture our students mathematical instincts and that what books are to reading, play is to math” So I think you have the right idea too.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 @Mathgarden 1.Start w/ Question 2.Students need time to struggle. 3. You aren’t the answer key. 4. Say yes to S ltudents ideas. 5. Play These princples encourage curiousity and clue seeking. They nurture mathetmatical instincts. Just like number talks:Allows students to wonder before answers

Just a reminder, “All In” doesn’t mean you have to be at school til 7 every night. Doesn’t meant you need to take school work home every night. Doesn’t mean you need to be swamped every weekend with planning or grading. This isn’t All In, this is Burn Out. Have a Restful weekend!

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 @Mathgarden Speed, Uno, Mancala are all games I have played with students that disguise number sense learning, but also create memories. They love playing and return the next day asking to play those games. These create memories, especially if you teach them a game they will love!

@diff_notless @KernCMC I agree 100%! Math should be interactive and engaging. Students get discourage and give up at the first sign of struggle. Side by side encouraging them that math is more than just numbers on the paper and using visual methods to illustrate the problem will be helpful.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 A mathematical proficient student applies all understanding of math content that meets standards and learning intentions. #MathRecess can help by offering opportunities to learn math in accessible venues and show that math is approachable, not daunting.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 Mandating may be the answer, but force doesnt always work. As a teacher, its up to you to assure that each student is getting their needs met. Establishing the routine in your classroom to assure 1:1 time occurs will be vital to success. Creating this routine and teacher effort.

Q4: As we live in a time of disruption, maths teaching and learning needs to change and become real 1:1. What are some steps we can take to attain this goal? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 Slow down. Share different methods and encourage safe places that allows for collaboration. If you dont get a problem, its ok to show that you dont understand it. Even as an adult im hesitant to share answers cause i dont think its right.

@KernCMC @WrightMath314 #MathRecess I think MathRecess should be rewarding opportunity through challenges that really capture the students attention. Relating it to many fun activities children ready enjoy (sports, games, etc)I think we should adopt a Kindergarten mindset because we can revisit curiosity
