Promising heat pump news! The Canadian Govt's new Green Building Strategy plans to explore requiring "installation of heat pumps instead of one-way central air conditioners in all new homes and certain retrofit scenarios." tinyurl.com/CanadaGBS

@cbarrie I don't have Krippendorff (1980) to hand, so can't confirm that he says "very good" there. But perhaps you can run it down.

@cbarrie Perhaps Krippendorff (1980) "Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology." Sage. In the 2004 edition he's cautious about 0.8 ("I recommend such levels with considerable hesitation", p. 242), but I've seen some citations of "very good" to the earlier edition.

@fgenovese__ HSBC's estimates may well be spot-on. But even if they're right, I'd want to see a comparison with housing completions and sales of other heating devices before concluding that things were going off the rails.

@GardMurray True, I checked and until June 2023 the numbers looked higher than in 2022. I am still afraid the December estimates are not good but I will take your caution as a sedative.

@chrismbryant The headline here seems a bit off to me. A lot hinges on HSBC's estimate of Q4 sales growth. If you look at the actual EHPA data that's available so far, heat pump sales were actually slightly *higher* from Q1-Q3 in 2023 than in 2022.

Thought heat pump sales were booming? Turns out they're falling, and heat pump manufacturers are having to cut jobs and/or production bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

@energysmartwv I'd take umbrage at being called an "egghead" if I weren't the kind of person who uses the word "umbrage."

This was a fun interview with @GardMurray ! Heat pump 101 plus the best policy lever we have. PS Alexander is more egghead than HVAC dude, as am I frankly =P

Not able to travel home for the holidays. A major consequence is I'm now stressing that I won't be able to find a real Milanese panettone in brexited NE UK. Halp! Fellow ex-pats, help an Italian sister out? The bakeries I trust don't ship beyond EU.

I should add one thing, which is the argument that the other economic costs (mostly energy costs) to the West are too high. Those costs are baked in. Russian gas isn't coming back to Europe. That cost is as sunk as the Moskva and so doesn't figure in peace analysis.

@Fortgoose @NoNukeBailouts Oof, sorry for your rough experience! I'd expect newer units to perform better... The path we recommend in our report includes backups, making sure that people have multiple options when it gets cold instead of relying on one piece of equipment.

@NoNukeBailouts @GardMurray Heat pumps are good. But they vibrate and break. Over 17 years mine needed an overhaul 3X. You need backup to keep Warm/cool.

We have millions of orphaned or abandoned oil and gas wells across the country that industry has not paid to clean up. Many of them are leaking. Climate pollution capture and storage should start right here!
Earthworks@Earthworks

Our PA thermographer Melissa Ostroff was on-site at the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania last week. Armed with a specialized OGI camera, she discovered alarming signs of pollution from the ground around a well. It's a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant. #EnvironmentalRights #AlleghenyNationalForest #PollutionAlert
