@cbarrie Perhaps Krippendorff (1980) "Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology." Sage. In the 2004 edition he's cautious about 0.8 ("I recommend such levels with considerable hesitation", p. 242), but I've seen some citations of "very good" to the earlier edition.

@fgenovese__ HSBC's estimates may well be spot-on. But even if they're right, I'd want to see a comparison with housing completions and sales of other heating devices before concluding that things were going off the rails.

@chrismbryant The headline here seems a bit off to me. A lot hinges on HSBC's estimate of Q4 sales growth. If you look at the actual EHPA data that's available so far, heat pump sales were actually slightly *higher* from Q1-Q3 in 2023 than in 2022.

I should add one thing, which is the argument that the other economic costs (mostly energy costs) to the West are too high.
Those costs are baked in. Russian gas isn't coming back to Europe.
That cost is as sunk as the Moskva and so doesn't figure in peace analysis.

The path we recommend in our report includes backups, making sure that people have multiple options when it gets cold instead of relying on one piece of equipment.

But not shared by enough distributors, apparently: central AC sales were 10x comparable heat pump sales in Canada last year, locking hundreds of thousands of families into less flexible equipment.

A decade ago when I distributed HVAC on the east coast, our policy was HP only, we didn't even stock residential AC units... From what I understood from other distributers across Canada that was standard. Only AC we dealt with was for critical cooling.

And objectively, having a heat pump and another backup heat source (which is what we model in the study) offers more redundancy and flexibility than a single heat source could. Plus the heat pump will handle the cooling in the summer.
