@clawrence @ACEEEdc published a study on this, and the paybacks are less than 2-3 years on replacing air conditioners with heat pumps in electric resistance households: eia.gov/consumption/re…
It's even better in Southeastern States which need more heating!
English

@TermPowerTrader @clawrence You can do it at the state level using Highlights for Space Heating and Highlights for Space Heating Fuel here: eia.gov/consumption/re…
English

@clawrence I'd love to see a version of this map that splits out electric resistance heating vs heat pumps but I imagine the uptake of heat pumps so far isn't enough to make a meaningful dent in the map.

@BloombergME @mattyglesias @JakeAuch Efficiency requirements are not limiting housing---focusing not only saddles residents with higher bills down the line but distracts from actual solutions like zoning reform. aceee.org/blog-post/2025…
English

@mattyglesias @JakeAuch The math is a lot shakier with existing housing stock, but not with new builds.

@dieworkwear What are your thoughts about the quality of Quince clothing? Both generally and specifically their Mongolian cashmere. I don’t place much value on something simply because it’s made in the US. But I would like to avoid supporting companies that promote poor labor environments.

when people say "luxury is dead," they mean the craftsmanship you get for the price paid. this is not even on your radar bc your reference points are just branding, pricing, and celebrity. if something is expensive, you think it's luxury.
SuspendedCap@ContrarianCurse
Luxury isn’t dead. What used to be luxury is priced to the middle class and used the old prestige to sell it And actual luxury is so fucking high it isn’t on most people’s radars.

Nerdy But Important:
Thermostat Settings for Hybrids
Josh Green, CEO of Mysa Thermostats, is talking at this month's Hybrid Heating Coordination Group about how various settings of hybrid/dual fuel HVAC affect comfort, performance, and operating costs.
Want to join us? Comment or DM me and I'll get you the meeting link. It's tomorrow (Friday) at 2 PM EST. Give me your email and I'll get you on the list so you get the recording of the presentation.
It's funny to be excited about such a nerdy topic, but I really am! It's about half HVAC pros and half policy wonks, so it's a big tent!

@PoliticsAndEd Washington, DC had shuttles running in two suburban areas, but recently canceled them: mwcog.org/assets/1/6/DC_…

@ScottRobertsDC I remember this the opposite way---even numbers on the right when walking towards the Capitol (decreasing numbers).

@energysmartwv Wow---super surprising to see the northeast states leading in market penetration! In the 2020 RECS state ownership data NH, VT, ME, and CT are not even shown due to not enough penetration. Looking forward to hearing more!

The midwest lags the nation in heat pump ownership at only 20%.
Hybrids (furnace + heat pump rather than furnace + AC) are the fastest way to shift this. Every one way AC that gets replaced will be a 2 way AC aka heat pump.
The rest of the country is around 40-50% penetration, so still a lot of improvement.
This is from a great study by Mitsubishi/Trane.
We'll be discussing this study on this month's Hybrid Heating Call which is 4/11 at 2 PM EST, message me if you'd like to join our diverse group of policymakers, manufacturers, and practitioners.
