In 1983, a 61-year-old potato farmer named Cliff Young showed up to the start of a 544-mile ultramarathon from Sydney to Melbourne in Australia wearing overalls and gumboots (rubber boots). He had no coach, no sponsor, and no dentures. He said the false teeth rattled when he ran. The other runners were elite athletes with corporate sponsorships and carefully planned sleep schedules. The accepted strategy was to run for 18 hours and sleep for 6. When they saw Cliff shuffling along at the back of the pack on day one, nobody took him seriously. Cliff didn’t know about the sleeping strategy. He grew up on a 2,000-acre farm with 2,000 sheep and no horses. When storms rolled in, he would round up the entire flock on foot. It sometimes took two or three days without stopping. “It took a long time,” he said. “But I’d always catch them.” So while the professionals slept each night, Cliff just kept shuffling. By day two he had closed the gap. By day four he was in front. He finished in 5 days, 15 hours, and 4 minutes, smashing the existing record by nearly two full days. He won by 10 hours. When he was handed the $10,000 prize, he said he didn’t know there was one. He gave most of it away to the other runners because he felt they had all worked just as hard as he had. When asked what the highlight of the race was, he said: “The prize money. Now that’s a helluva lot of potatoes.” His shuffling technique, once mocked by the press, became known as the “Young Shuffle.” At least three subsequent winners of the same race used it. He kept running competitively into his late 70s. A monument shaped like a gumboot stands in his hometown.

Corbin Middlemas has reported on ABC Sport that Wildcard Weekend could be up for sale as early as the 2027 season. This year, the teams finishing 7th and 8th will host the Wildcard fixtures, but from next season, hosting rights could go to the highest bidder. The AFL says it will reassess the model at the end of the year. @CorbinMiddlemas reports that preliminary conversations have already taken place between the AFL and the WA government about the concept.
