BRUNO SAMMARTINO vs LARRY ZBYSZKO - Philadelphia, PA - March 1, 1980 The decision I announced at the end of this match was ridiculous. It was way out of normal protocol. That's why I spoke to Gorilla Monsoon in the ring before announcing the decision. But for the safety of the referee and anyone involved in making the decsion, management decided this was the best way to go. The correct decision was that the referee disqualified Sammartino and awarded the match to Zbyszko. But that announcement would have put the ref at risk. And here is where today's fans might have difficulty understanding. Bruno was loved and respected so much, that anyone seen as undermining him would have been tagged as an untrustworthy enemy and possibly be in physical danger. That's not what management wanted for their refs. So ultimately, the blame was placed on an unnamed beauracrat.

Everyone is overlooking the words "my first break" . . . While with time I developed announcing skills and style, when I stepped into the ring for the first time, I was a 21-year-old kid with no experience, no training, no desire or thought of a profession in pro wrestling . . . Which is why I speculate . . . because I am short (and had a conservative look) wrestlers beside me looked even bigger and crazier . . . It took years of trial and error before I created my style . . . Make sense? . . . gmc

I think my first break as a ring announcer was because I was short. I made the wrestlers look even larger than they were. I can think of no other reason.
