Well, that speech from @andyburnham was a breath of fresh air. The country has been crying out for hope based on fact not fiction, and this morning it got it in spades. A Government - and a Number 10 North - committed to creating good growth in every postcode, and a politics and country that’s built for working people, can and will restore hope and dignity to communities across Britain. They will be built on the credible plans Andy laid out for housing, utilities, technical education, devolution, young people, city and rural economies, transport, key industries and more. A final point. Andy’s tone and language were so different from what we’ve become used to. There was no name calling, no point scoring, no cheap hits. If he can, by operating with respect for others, as he always does, and by directing his anger at systems that have failed us rather than opponents or groups of society, as so many politicians now do, he can I hope restore civility and a focus on ideas and action to our politics.

Parts of Britain will become unrecognisable if tent cities are allowed to take hold. We’ve already seen how this plays out elsewhere: open drug use, rising disorder, and communities feeling abandoned by the authorities. Taking away police powers to move on encampments doesn’t solve homelessness. It simply removes one of the few tools available to keep public spaces safe and usable for everyone. The people who suffer most won’t be politicians in Westminster. It’ll be ordinary residents, shop owners, women, children, and vulnerable people who have to live with the consequences.
