This sentence by Dostoyevsky hits so hard. “You sensed that you should be following a different path, a more ambitious one, you felt that you were destined for other things but you had no idea how to achieve them and in your misery you began to hate everything around you.”

In our new piece for @WSJopinion, Bridget Toomey and I detail the tragedy of how good intentions at the United Nations now facilitate sanctions evasion at sea. This story involves the UN, the Houthis, and Russia. It’s almost too wild to believe, but it’s true. This is the story of how the UN bought an oil tanker, how that tanker was captured by the Houthis, and how Russia is using it to move sanctioned oil. H/T to @tldraanan and @Lloydslisted for breaking the story @LloydsList.

A tanker acquired by the UN for $55m to prevent a massive oil spill off Yemen is essentially being used by the #Houthis as floating storage for Russian oil, while costs for running the vessel are still being fronted by the UN. The UN purchased the VLCC Yemen in 2023 as part of an operation to salvage the oil on board FSO Safer, a 49-year-old floating storage unit that was in danger of sinking. Both Yemen and the still floating FSO Safer are now under the effective control of the Houthis, the Iran-backed Yemeni militia group responsible for attacking over 100 ships since November 2023. @LloydsList🔗in comments. President Zelenskyy has been one of the greatest leaders of our time, leading Ukraine through the darkest period of its recent history, rising up to Russia’s aggression, being an inspiration to the Ukrainian people and ensuring that Ukraine’s voice is heard on the world stage.

@ILA_NewsX @elonmusk No one disagrees that the war is stupid and should never have happened? 😅 pretty sure the Ukrainians aren't thrilled about losing their children and loved ones. As if they chose to have Putin come and slaughter them FFS

So, Russia can illegally invade a sovereign democratic European country, murder 1000s of Ukrainian civilians, then rope in North Korean soldiers to help them wage war, and the West’s correct response should be to.. *checks notes* … give Putin what he’s stolen? Do f*ck off.

Yatreda ያጥሬዳ@yatreda

Introducing 𝐀𝐛𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧: Our new collection premiering at the @ToledoMuseum. Abyssinian Queen is Yatreda’s first museum presentation and is a big moment in our journey. My sister and I were inspired by the oral history from our childhood growing up in the Ethiopian countryside. A folktale we heard as kids became a sketch. That sketch became a production with historical artifacts with handcrafted props created by our family collective. The production became a series of final motion portrait artworks. The Abyssinian Queen, played by our cousin Yayu, is not based on a specific historical person, but is brought to life by gathering together collective memory across Ethiopia’s rich history. She is on a journey from one kingdom to another, traveling through the mystical forest in between borders. She is carried on a throne of fresh grass, which is a symbol of fertility and renewal in Ethiopia. It is about our grand past but also our potential for future rebirth. Abyssinian Queen is featured as part of our 𝐻𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑌𝑎𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑎 installation at the Toledo Museum of Art, brought to life during our residency this year. Just this afternoon, I took a final walk through the 𝐸𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑎 𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑑𝑠 exhibition in the Toledo Museum of Art. Everything was hung, and lighting was being finalized. I walked past ancient artworks from my country: crosses, manuscripts, and other historical artifacts, some of which are 1700 years old. Then, there is the section of living history, which are artworks produced by living Ethiopian artists. It fills us with speechless joy to be placed in this historical context between past and present. I want to give all my love to the entire team at the Toledo Museum of Art who valued my country and our unique place at the crossroads of the world. Modern tools continue the legacy of ancient artisans ዘመናዊ መሳሪያዎች የ ጥንታዊውን ጥበብ ታሪክ ያስቀጥላሉ

In the past, celebrities were actors, writers, athletes, dancers, musicians. Today they are also YouTubers, TikTokers, Podcasters, Instagrammers. How did our identities, and genres, become corporations and corporate-owned. And who or what are we working for.
