Shoplifting has become a middle-class crime, with police reports of thefts doubling in two years. Nearly 40% of all shoppers admit to not scanning goods correctly. Meanwhile, average wages rose alongside inflation, so why is everyone suddenly out on the rob?

@fesshole Depending on how many items were in the order for person number 1, those subs could have made their online order a complete waste of time

I'm a delivery driver for a supermarket. I've had 2 incidents that make me think the world has gone nuts.1)There were 8 items out of stock/ subbed and the person actually cried.2) I was 20 minutes later than planned and the customer tried to get me fired. It's groceries ffs.

The reason Americans consume lots of high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar is also because of import tariffs (and quotas) imposed by a president.

@tmsilverman That's the point - if you have mental health issues, then a therapist who has experienced the same issues as you, and worked through them, is going to be more help than someone who hasn't.

Unpopular opinion but therapists usually are mentally ill themselves.

@Stab_Ol It certainly is the parent's job, but that's exceptionally hard to police. Do you want the state to track the food you serve in your home? Poor nutrition has a negative impact on learning, behaviour and career prospects, so it's a good idea to have a state-supported safety net.

Killing-off Billingsgate and Smithfield markets is a horrific erasure of London's medieval food trading heritage. I loved visiting these markets. For the first time in nearly 1,000 years, London will be without wholesale meat and fish markets. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

It's hilarious that the petition for a general election has got over a million LESS votes as the petition for a second Brexit referendum, which obviously didn't trigger a second referendum. Keep trying guys, keep trying.

Been at the farmers protest this morning and what I am genuinely trying to understand is why farming should be exempt from inheritance tax compared to other low-profit margin, family run businesses which have property assets?

@GavinWren @BGatesIsaPyscho They broke into castle grounds which are supposed to be secured. They weren’t. That’s the story and I’ve not seen anyone saying it was “the castle”. Lackadaisical security surrounding Royal properties which have always been well guarded, should concern everyone.

🚨🇬🇧 Masked Robbers broke into Windsor Castle while Prince William & Princess Kate were sleeping. Yep in 2024 Britain - you are no longer safe even if you live in a castle with a moat, walls & armed guards - it’s that bad.

@AaronLoveman It's an opinion from someone in the UK, a country that's got a lot of form in the "global fall from grace" stakes. We know how to do it properly here.

It's interesting to watch America from an outsider's perspective and see how they will deal with their decline. They've peaked as a global power and are now on the way down. It happened to every big global power in history, and now it's America's turn.

@hwallop @elonmusk I quickly realised that Threads is great but it’s simply not the same and more importantly, ignoring Twitter would mean missing out a massive slice of popular opinion - even if the opinions are contrary to my own

I have no intention of quitting Twitter. Mostly because I was here before @elonmusk joined. However, I’m aware lots of people are leaving. So you can also find me on Threads as @harrywallop – posting about mince pies, Greggs, economic data, realpolitik.
