This mural has been widely published in the media since it was seemingly erected last night. So I am simply contributing to the debate around it, without expressing a personal view (other than what I believe the legal position to be). In my view, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this mural as a matter of law. It would seem to reflect the views of many ordinary decent people, not just in Northern Ireland, but across the UK. It is strong imagery, that may not be to everyone’s taste, and indeed many may not share or object to the perceived views espoused (but, I suspect, many will) but it is well within the bounds of what is lawful free speech. I find it hard to see how anyone was cautioned under the Public Order (NI) Order for displaying this.

The British government is taking a dangerous path with legacy which threatens to erode any remaining confidence families have left. I recently met with the UN’s Special Rapporteur on truth & justice, Bernard Duhaime. To maintain the confidence of victims & families & the integrity of any legacy process, transparency & independence must be at its core. From overly restrictive disclosure to a ‘national security veto’, political control of appointments to bodies & protections for British military personnel, this legislation looks set to fall well short. Sinn Féin will continue to speak up for families who have fought for decades for truth & justice for their loved ones.
