Puglia is super hot right now. Gallipoli doesn't get mentioned as often, but it should. Charming old town on an island, fortified by the sea. Baroque churches and beaches that look more Greek than Italian. And it qualifies for the 7% retirement tax. Have you been?

@cookhuntersol @EnergyMix_UK @JayW132 I have two children in private education. We’ve seen an increase in numbers since the change. That said, an independent school with over 100 years of history closed last year and we did inherit a number of pupils as a result.

@EnergyMix_UK @JayW132 They were always wrong and now it’s being proven. There is a line item saying VAT receipts from pvt schools but the number of schools closing or students leaving pvt education and going back into state funded is dramatic. Many kids have extra needs that the state will now fund

VAT on private school fees was pitched as a way to raise money for public services. New report: it's projected to cost the public £181m by 2038.

@garethj57708138 @joemichalczuk Subsidise? And also, if it was indeed a subsidy, I’ll tell you why it would make sense to pay it. Maybe because of the pressure it relieves from and already broken state offering. Wake up you muppet.

@joemichalczuk Why should ordinary working people who can’t afford to send their kids to private schools subsidise wealthy families who can’t afford????????

Out of all the decisions this government has made, this is one of the very worst (and it’s a long list) - simply because it was made without proper due diligence and driven by the politics of envy, chasing a cheap headline. It is a bitter, spiteful policy that shows no regard for the children immediately affected - not to mention the local economies that rely on these schools: teachers, caterers, sports clubs, cleaners, maintenance - the list goes on. As predicted, schools are closing, and more pupils are being pushed into the state sector, adding pressure and cost where the system is already stretched. Private education is one of Britain’s success stories. Countries around the world try to emulate these schools or send their children to them. So of course it makes sense that this government - which seems to resent British success - would want to undermine them with the stroke of a pen. Not only that - it has made private schooling MORE elitist. Eton, Harrow, the very top end - were always going to be fine, as were the families who can afford those fees. It is the mid-tier schools - and the aspirational families who stretch to afford them - who are taking the hit. The local tradesman, the local GP - the families for whom this was a genuine choice for their children. For them, that choice is now gone. Children have been pulled out of their schools. People have lost their jobs - all for nothing. This is a government that seems to hate Britain, its culture and traditions - and is determined to crush hope and aspiration within it.

@joemichalczuk And ironically, despite the regularity of U Turns this government has performed, this simply won’t be reversed. It was an ideological policy, not an economic one.

There's little value to be found in Mallorca right now but this place looks not too bad. 5-storey townhouse, 3 beds/2 baths and with 2 separate entrances (€995k). I would call this a good lifestyle purchase and a fair investment at best. Main reasons: the location (old town) and those Port Sóller views. What do you guys think?

@DavyBaty81 Agree, but Bruce had absolutely zero credit in the bank. Howe, to my mind, has credit in the bank. Additionally, I doubt very much that Howe would have requested Woltemade, hardly a Howe type profile.

@Rimbeux @KieranMaguire It’s not just the teams, the governing bodies of the game. VAR is the single worst ‘advancement” in the game in my lifetime. It’s worse than multi coloured boots 😆

@GearsAndTears @KieranMaguire £ is more raising stakes rather than standards in this moment, all employing teams of analysts with most aiming to close down games & minimise risk. No more even of young coaches playing like Pep to get big jobs, more Big Sam now & marginal gains, arguing marginal ref decisions

Chelsea parent company BlueCo 22, which owns both Chelsea and Strasbourg, and strips out all the transactions between group companies, lost £630m in 24/25, taking total losses since the company formed in 2022 to £1,675 million, or £10.4m a week since the acquisition date of Chelsea

@SAFCBANTER1973 I mean where to begin with this one dimensional take. The reason we needed to recruit this Summer was because of PSR. The reason we didn’t get our 1st or 2nd choice replacements, again because of PSR. But yea, we spent some cash so PSR ain’t the issue. Brain donor.

I don't normally get involved in mag talk, however. Howe moaning about PRS is rubbish. Their bench today cost £316 million excluding add-ons. It's poor recruitment not PSR that's the problem. They overpaid and panic bought players. They had some real quality but added rubbish.
Keith Downie@SkySports_Keith

The more you think about last summer’s transfer window, the more it has killed Newcastle’s season - and will also hamstring them in future windows. £222m worth of talent signed last summer (4 players) on the bench today, only getting a handful of minutes between them. If even two of them had been an immediate success (like Isak, Bruno G, Trippier, Burn etc were) #NUFC would be in a much stronger position and IMO in European places. In addition to the psychological problems when they go in front (25 point dropped from winning positions), it feels like there’s a real issue with staleness in the team. You can get away with one big-money signing not working out…but not 4 in one window. (NB. I think Ramsey is a player btw, but he’s not played enough due to injury).

Chelsea managed a £500k tax credit in 2024/25 for 'Research and Development'. According to legislations, these are given for 'an advance in science or technology-going further than routine improvements'. I never knew creative accounting came under the heading of science and technology.

@Rimbeux @KieranMaguire I’ve been an avid fan of football, specifically UK football, for over 40 years. The base product has never been in such a poor state. They are ‘improving’ all of the brilliance from the game, piece by piece. It’s a shame, really

If Spurs stay up this season they'll 100% move for Trafford, if Villa get CL I can also see them moving for him. He fits a couple of teams perfectly. I'm not sure #nufc are going to be the same pull in the summer. Be interesting to see how many no.1 targets we get this summer

Pogacar clearly needs to ride Giro and Vuelta. He obviously has a genuine (>20%) chance to win all three Grand Tours and all five monuments in one year if he tries, which would be the second greatest sporting feat of all time. This is also the last time he will have this chance.
