Some years ago, I was travelling from Lagos to Ile-Ife. The Ife bus wasn’t filling up, so I changed plans and boarded a bus to Ibadan to break the journey. Traffic was brutal. I got to Iwo Road around 1 a.m. We had a house in Ibadan, but it was in Akobo, and getting there at that hour without Uber or Bolt felt impossible. I had even decided I might sleep near a police van till morning. Then I heard conductors calling Ile-Ife. I was stunned. And honestly, a bit scared. But I entered. We left around 2 a.m. There was a young lady sitting beside me. From her phone conversation, I gathered she was coming to Obafemi Awolowo University for post-UTME. As we were approaching Ife, she turned to me and said, “Please sir, can I stay at your place tonight?” I was genuinely taken aback. She explained the person meant to host her had gone unreachable after she got to Iwo Road, and she had her exam the next day. At the time, I had a roommate, and his cousin was also around. I sent him a message, explained the situation, and he agreed. So I told her she could come. Around 3:30 a.m., my guy @LanRey_0 came to wait for us at the OAU gate. That was how I took in a total stranger. By morning, she did a quick clean-up, didn’t even bother bathing, and rushed off for her exam. She took my number, but somehow I never took hers. Funny enough, till today, I do not know her name. Sometimes I wonder if she passed that exam. I tell myself if she had made it into school, maybe she would have called. Today, I saw a mutual share a story about accommodating a stranger, and this memory came rushing back. Life is funny. Sometimes people pass through your life for only one night and leave a permanent memory. If you are that lady and you ever see this, I hope life has been kind to you.

The Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:21) Jesus tells a man who has kept every commandment: “Go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31) A wealthy man feasts daily. A beggar named Lazarus starves at his gate. Both die. Lazarus goes to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man goes to torment. No dramatic sin is named. The indictment is the gate he ignored. The Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31–46) The most explicit text on this subject. The righteous inherit the Kingdom because they fed the hungry, clothed the naked, welcomed the stranger, visited the sick and imprisoned. The condemned are turned away for the same reasons, inverted. The verdict in both cases: “Inasmuch as you did it, or did not do it, to one of the least of these.” Brethren, if we go by these texts, giving is a requisite visa to access Heaven. Temisan was an embodiment of this ideal. He lived it. He was it. He gave and gave and just gave. He always found a reason to. Let us pray: May brother Temisan inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. May his family thrive here despite his absence, because he will always be here, somehow. And may the rest of us learn to give, of ourselves and our resources.
