Statement of PAD leaders meeting in Stellenbosch 24 May 2026 The prosecution of opposition leaders who are fighting to democratise their countries has become a feature of African autocracies, intent on destroying democratic practices in favour of extending their rule through repression. There are many cases, but three in Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda stand out as flagrant abuses of court proceedings to unjustly prosecute leaders. The treason trial of Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu has been taking place for over 400 days. His crime was to call for constitutional and electoral reforms ahead of the October 2025 election. His party, Chadema, was barred from participating in those elections, which were openly rigged. Bereft of credible evidence and the appearance of secret witnesses in a special enclosed cell, the trial has made a mockery of legal practice. Lissu, who was hit by 16 bullets in a failed assassination attempt in 2017, has been unable to have the medical treatment he requires as a result of this brutal assault since his trial began. In Uganda, Dr Kizza Besigye is being tried in a military court after his arrest in November 2024 – more than 540 days ago. Dr Besigye was prevented from participating in Uganda’s rigged election of January 2025, which saw the leading opposition figure, Bobi Wine, denied victory in a rigged election. Wine has since fled the country, fearing for his life. Dr Besigye’s trial, which began as a military tribunal, follows a familiar pattern. The state has attempted to get witnesses to testify in secret and has dragged the trial on despite Dr Besigye’s poor health. In Rwanda, opposition leader Victoire Ingabire was arrested in June 2026 on the farcical charge of creating a criminal organisation and inciting public disorder because she challenged the ongoing trial of other opposition activists. Along with nine members of her political party, the Development and Liberty for All (Développement et Liberté pour tous or Dalfa-Umurinzi), she has been charged with establishing or joining a criminal organisation, inciting public unrest or disturbances and various other offences, all of which she denies. Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda present themselves as progressive countries that embrace democracy in one or another form. The reality is that these countries are led by increasingly tyrannical authoritarians that have no tolerance of opposition and are willing to abuse their courts to remove those who criticize them from public life. This lawfare against democracy is condemned in the strongest possible terms by democratic African leaders who are trying to build a continent where accountability, the rule of law and the respect for human dignity are paramount. We call on the international community to join us in demanding the cessation of these farcical legal proceedings and the immediate release of these leaders. We call on the authorities to see to it that proper medical attention is provided to Tundu Lissu and Dr Kizza Besigye, who are ill and require regular medical treatment. These developments in the East Africa region should be of great concern for those who count themselves among its leaders, particularly with ongoing instability in Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia. The leadership that addresses democratic regression and the erosion in the rule of law will place itself on the right side of history. The fight for democracy in Africa cannot be stopped by the actions of tyrants determined to hold onto power. Signed on behalf of the Platform for African Democrats Seretse Khama Ian Khama Former President of the Republic of Botswana

This habit of lecturing Kenyans that no president has ruled this country for one term, so Uliam has to rule for two terms, is a very terrible entitlement. Kenyans don't owe anyone two terms. You are allowed to be president as long as we choose to. If we say half-term, so be it.

@Steve254barasa I’m not crying. I’m sharing the reality and pain that many citizens are silently carrying every day. I am simply reaching out to my network in the hope that someone may help her secure a job opportunity.

Nyakundi Report
Nyakundi Report@NyakundiReport·
Hello Nyakundi, Please hide my identity. I have worked closely around the operations of Christ Is The Answer Ministries and what many congregants see publicly is completely different from what happens internally at the head office. CITAM is one of the biggest churches in Kenya and receives millions through offerings, tithes, and donor funding from local and international partners. Congregants faithfully give believing the money is being used to transform lives and support meaningful humanitarian and spiritual work. But internally, corruption, nepotism, hypocrisy, and misuse of influence have deeply affected the institution. One of the biggest problems is recruitment. Vacancies are advertised publicly and interviews conducted, but most of the time the process is already predetermined. Jobs are handed to relatives, friends, and connected individuals while qualified Kenyans who genuinely attend interviews are only used to make the process appear transparent. The HR Manager, Rahab Waturu, has turned recruitment into a family affair. She continuously brings in relatives and people connected to her circle. Recently, she brought in a relative called Moses Karanja whose qualifications leave many employees shocked, yet he continues occupying lucrative positions while more qualified and competent applicants are ignored. What hurts many staff members is that the church publicly preaches integrity, fairness, and accountability, yet internally the exact opposite is happening. Employees are frustrated because favoritism matters more than professionalism and competence. There is also serious rot in procurement and development projects. Tenders involving construction of church sanctuaries, schools, and other infrastructure projects are inflated through cooperation between procurement officials and business people connected to insiders. Millions are allocated, but the quality of work done does not reflect the amount spent. Some structures are poorly done despite huge budgets being approved. From the outside, the church maintains a polished image and many congregants have no idea what is happening behind closed doors. But internally, the institution is slowly being destroyed by greed, nepotism, poor leadership, and people who are more interested in protecting networks and personal interests than serving God or the congregation honestly. Many faithful members continue sacrificing financially thinking they are supporting a transparent ministry, yet internally workers are watching resources being mismanaged while accountability continues disappearing.

Hi Cyprian kindly hide identity incase you wanna expose this. I am a Kenya registered nurse and am a member of Nursing Council of Kenya since am registered. So a week ago uniforms were introduced to the company lifecare and they are white so you have to wash everyday since were were only given two pairs. So it happened today i was on my periods and the uniform is white hadi trousers and i decided to wear my nursing Council uniform only to be asked to go home and change. The white uniform is very frustrating especially when working in ereas like emergency since you get patients who are bleeding and all so you need to wash them usiku ukitoka job despite kuchoka. So today i was asked to go back and wear the lifecare uniform. I stay very far from work. We are deducted salary every month even if you are late to work na 1 minute. Mind you, you could be late with a minute but leave work after 14 hours and we work 12 hours. Today marks the end of my career, i hate nursing The company has made me hate my career and i am looking forward to doing business rather than get Hypertension at work

This is the current situation at the Technical University of Kenya, Nairobi. A larger number of students have been barred from accessing exam rooms due to fee arrears. Over the past six months, we've witnessed an increase in the number of students dropping out of school as a result of unaffordable education. In hospitals, you are detained for being poor. In schools, you are locked out for being poor. " They won't build schools anymore, all they'll build will be prison, prison," Rest In Peace Lucky Dube.
