Letters informed recipients that their licenses were “immediately invalid.” The law requires all gender markers on IDs and birth certificates to match sex assigned at birth, retroactively canceling any previous changes — a move no other state has attempted. The law also bans transgender people from using restrooms that match their gender identity in government buildings and allows citizens to sue alleged violators for up to $1,000. Governor Kelly vetoed the bill, but the Republican supermajority overrode the veto. Kansas had allowed gender marker changes since 2007.
