Today, we're proud to celebrate an @AirCanada flight operated by an all-Indigenous crew. In partnership with @musqueam, @fnmpc and Air Canada, we continue walking the path towards reconciliation and representation in our industry.
A story from my past. I don’t like remembering it because I miss my friend but it is relevant to the pronoun debate.
My late best friend had a daughter I loved very much. In her early twenties she started dating a woman who said she was a man.
My views were known over the years. It had always been ok to hold them and for us all to debate them. The new woman - let’s call her “Boris” so we know she’s a woman but also know she’s pretending she isn’t - was absolutely lovely. Really sweet and friendly. I was introduced to her as Boris and I called her Boris. Referred to her in every sentence as Boris.
In all my interactions I called her Boris. I never once said “him”. I loved the daughter with all my heart but I refused to pretend for either of them. Because it isn’t the right thing to do - to lie about what you are seeing. To bend your own mind and language around someone else’s ideological belief simply because they are in your life. You live your truth, not someone else’s truth.
The daughter - let’s call her Sylvia - tested me one day. She had been pushing for a bust up about Boris. Boris herself didn’t seem too arsed. We always got on. But I don’t know if she was pushing behind the scenes.
“Auntie Jean. It’s marvellous isn’t it? Boris has been approved for top surgery!”
I could not help it. I put my head in my hands. It was involuntary. It was enough. I had not said a word and I didn’t say a word. Just the gesture. A young woman was going to have a needless double mastectomy. I wanted to cry for her. I crumpled.
Sylvia exploded. She demanded I leave (my best friend’s house). She then demanded I was banished from the house forever. Young people can be like this.
My friend and I negotiated the pernicious influence this terrible ideology was wreaking on our lives. I never went round to hers. She came to mine instead. We kept on loving each other for what else could we do? We simply didn’t discuss it. We carried on with our beautiful friendship. Our heart were a little sore.
My friend became seriously ill. Eventually when she was dying I was allowed to the house again. When she could no longer get to mine (we lived 200 metres from each other) I was finally allowed back to the home of my best friend. A woman I loved so deeply and a loss I will never recover from.
This was my personal life. This was not online. This was how an ideology came into my life but how it was still important that I protect my sanity from its demands and its devastating effects on people I loved. I never called Boris “he” but I never called him “she” either. I was never cruel and I never pushed my politics - in fact once Boris arrived on the scene I simply didn’t raise them.
The personal is political.
It might have been perfectly fine for me to play along with Boris and Sylvia and sacrifice myself to their language. Who would know?
Well, I would. But that would be for me to deal with and decide if I could manage.
But it would be very different if - for everyone who has ever read a tweet from me since 2013/14 - to suddenly hear me say “not Boris though”.
If I did I would expect you to question me about why. Even feel a bit angry at me. You’d be right to.
But you don’t have to. Because even in my personal life I knew that the word woman, and the safety of women, is something I feel so vehemently about - I will not relinquish its value on demand or under threat.
I hold the line in my home and outside it. If you want to say I was wrong. It’s fine. I wasn’t. But you can say it. I won’t die of hearing it.
Jimmy Kimmel: "It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am. It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination. And they know that."
One year ago today the majority of Canadians rejected Pierre Poilievre.
Why is he still campaigning?
Why are we still paying him?
Why are we still housing him?
Guys, let’s go!
Canada will join the European Political Community as a guest!
Mark Carney will attend the summit in Armenia
Canada’s participation in this pan-European platform is symbolically huge: Canada is clearly aligning more closely with Europe in its foreign policy!
Canada has been invited to a European Political Community (EPC) meeting, the first time a traditionally non-european country has been.
Canada is aligning closer to Europe than ever before.
“Just to be clear”
This guy is using children to usher in more controls. He also quite clearly has a serious anti-capitalist stance. Why do we need the Government to take parenting out of the hands of parents. What’s next? Removing alcohol from houses that have children? Cigarettes? Hot stoves?
Parents need to start taking responsibility for their children, not using the Government to do it.
Today’s raids by state and federal law enforcement happened because our state agencies caught irregular behavior and reported it. That’s how the system is supposed to work, and our agencies will keep at it as long as there are fraudsters around to put behind bars.
If you commit fraud in Minnesota you’re going to get caught — and that’s exactly what we saw today. We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it.
Every day Mark Carney hits it out of the park.
I will admit that even I agreed it was time for Justin Trudeau to step down, not out of hate for him, but out of desire for meaningful change.
The new Canada Strong Fund is exactly that.
Building the future for our families.
Trump called O’Donnell ‘horrible,’ cut her off with ‘excuse me,’ told her ‘you should be ashamed of yourself,’ & said ‘you’re a disgrace.’
This is textbook verbal & emotional abuse rooted in misogyny, using power to belittle women.
If you were her, how would you have responded?
Wages have grown faster than inflation every month Mark Carney has been Prime Minister - great news for Canada.
But why doesn't the Bank of Canada aim for zero inflation, or deflation? And what about sectors with higher inflation or lower wage growth?
Let's jump into it.
