Georgia player hits a home run in his final college at-bat. As he rounds the bases, his brother, who plays for the other team, gives him a high five. Their parents were in the stands watching the whole thing.

People who only respond well in good circumstances can't be trusted. That's the honest truth. They can be good people. Kind and caring. Good hearts with good intentions. But anyone who isn't reliable in non-ideal conditions isn't reliable in any trustable way because most of life happens in non-ideal conditions. They live as sailors dependent on good weather sailing an ocean destined for bad weather.

Journey’s “Only the Young” plays as Louden Swain runs across multiple bridges spanning the Spokane River during the opening credits of VISION QUEST. Director Harold Becker used these bridges as a metaphor for his coming-of-age story where crossing a body of water symbolizes transition, rebirth, and leaving the past behind. One of the biggest culture killers in any program is rewarding the minimalist. When talented people are praised despite giving minimal effort, that standard eventually spreads throughout the entire team. Over time, the culture shifts from pursuing excellence to doing just enough to get by. Championship programs are not built on talent alone. They are built on consistency, accountability, and people willing to do the hard things daily, especially when nobody is watching. Talent may win moments, but sustained success comes from a team full of people who refuse to live at the minimum standard.

For anyone who’s ever faced a personal challenge, it doesn’t get much better than the 'Six Minutes' speech in VISION QUEST. This scene wasn’t in the 1979 novel by Terry Davis. Elmo's monologue was written specifically for the film by screenwriter Darryl Ponicsan (THE LAST DETAIL, TAPS). Actor J. C. Quinn absolutely knocks it out of the park here. If you’d like to support the @FMJDiary project, you can bid on an original poster below. I signed and inscribed it with Elmo’s iconic line: “It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes.” ebay.us/m/p2kYOc

Don't get into a War With Reality: Every person reading this has things happening in their life they don't like. A relationship that feels off. A change at work. A project that's off the rails. Something that feels harder than it should be. Health issues. Marriage tension. Parenting fears and doubts. Something. And because they don't like it, they fight it. They're angry with it. They resist it and argue with it. They put energy into wishing it was different than it is. They see reality but they're at war with it. Being at War With Reality is wasted energy. It won't change reality or improve what you're at war with. And it never will. All it does is drain your energy and skill to respond well to a reality you don't like. The only way start improving it is to stop being at war with it. The disciplined response to an unpleasant reality is acceptance. Not giving up. Not emotionally detaching. Not lowering you standard. Disciplined Acceptance: Freeing yourself from being at war with reality so you can instead focus all your effort on responding to it with purpose and skill. No more fighting the fact that it's happening. The event is real. You can't un-ring the bell. Fighting reality is like standing in the rain arguing that it shouldn't be raining. But it is raining. And now you're angry, distracted, and wet. When something doesn't go your way, and it will happen every week, accept it fast, accept it completely. Don't waste energy fighting reality. You've lost that fight every time. Stop getting into it. Instead, put your effort and energy into responding with courage, discipline, and resilience. Don't blame and complain about what should have been. Accept the reality that is, because it's the only one you have, and get better from it. That's Disciplined Acceptance. It's a high standard. You don't do it because it's easy. You do it because it's necessary. End the War With Reality.
