@MatthewModine Glad he made it 😊 Saw the movie Memphis Belle in the theater. It was a fantastic movie. A, then, 13 year old girl wanted to see it, so I took her. We both absolutely loved it. 🥰 Thank you for this additional insight ❤️🙏

My uncle, Captain Wylder Modine, was a real B-17 "Flying Fortress" pilot during WWII. After returning from a bombing mission, he got hit by anti-aircraft fire and almost had his right arm taken off. He had his crew bail, but his co-pilot was shot up really bad and couldn’t parachute, so my uncle, with one arm, landed the heavily damaged B-17 in a field behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart. I talked with him before making MEMPHIS BELLE in 1989. He gave me his dress uniform to wear in the film and said, “when you put that on, don't disrespect it.”

@MatthewModine My Grandaddy was a Bomber Pilot in WW2. I watched it with him when I was home on leave from the Marines. He gave it high praise for it's accuracy. I give you high praise for being PVT Joker in Full Metal Jacket. Semper FI MAC 🫡

@MatthewModine My grandfather was in the army air corps in Europe. I watched Memphis Belle with him once. I saw him cry twice in the 30+ years I was blessed to spend with him, my grandmothers funeral and watching the Memphis Belle…powerful!

@MatthewModine I was a young mom when my husband and I went to watch the film in the theater. We were supposed to go to dinner afterwards but I was so overwhelmed by the story and scenes, we went home instead. As a pilot's daughter, it was far too real. You captured all of it so well.

I’m often asked about the pegboard scene in VISION QUEST. That was all me. No stunt doubles or safety measures. I trained for a long time and had to climb it several times to get all the angles. The “trick” is not to over extend, so you’d be pulling up your entire body weight. You have to keep it compact. @MatthewModine That’s incredible. What an honor to wear his uniform in a movie that honored his legacy as well as the sacrifice of every airman in that campaign. If you read this, I’d be interested in your opinion of “Masters of the Air”. I loved that series.

@MatthewModine @RobManess My grandpa was WW2 Seabee and had 5 uncles in Vietnam. I never knew my late grandpa was in WW2 until I was in the Marines for 4 years! Why? The family never talked about it. Many wanted to forget the war and raise their families. The Greatest Generation 💯!

@DUD6887 Thank you to your uncle for his service and sacrifice.

@MatthewModine My uncle was KIA August 17th, 1944, while on a mission as the radio operator in a B-24 Liberator dropping supplies over Poland to the resistance and special ops. He completed 25 of those missions before his death.
