Congratulations to all, but especially to @FritzLaylin who not only does exceptionally cool science, but also has been an amazing peer-mentor turned friend over the past 5 years! An incredibly well deserved honor and brilliant investment by HHMI!

Dear San Diego, while I absolutely LOVE SLC (this was my first time here but I will 100% be looking for ways to come back) I would like to make it home tonight, I have a busy day tomorrow and would like to NOT spend the night in Denver…Thanks!

Awesome catchup breakfast with my first ever informatics friend @GenomeGal ✨ It is so fun watching friends careers explode from when you were baby informaticists together! Now on to #AIME24 Day ✌️

Oh and yes, while the “no exit” label does mean you can’t access the parking lot from the healing garden, both doors were also locked.

I absolutely adore hospitals that spend money building a “healing garden” with comfortable benches and lovely water features and then immediately lock the doors so patients and families can’t access. Great design, no notes.

Ah commencement, when we all sit outside in robes meant to keep medieval monks warm on the hottest day of the year while someone reads the phonebook

We enjoyed having Congresswoman Diana DeGette on our campus this morning! From cardiology to women’s mental health, diabetes and more, faculty shared highlights of their work at the @LudemanCenter. | #CUAnschutz

Today, I toured the Ludeman Family Center for Women’s Health Research @CUAnschutz and met with the mentors, researchers, and community leaders dedicated to advancing women’s health. Anschutz is world-class and does vital work to improve health outcomes around the world.

And honestly, people are much better at identifying what doesn’t work than knowing how to fix it. Ego aside, most “constructive feedback” is at best marginally more useful than just a list of problem areas

This 100% - especially when it involves grants. Even if the person seems like an a-hole, almost no one is going to take the time to give you feedback unless they care about you and your success. We all have way too much on our plates and it is way easier to just not say anything.
Michael Baym@baym

I suppose the point is that constructive feedback is about helping build the person, not necessarily their idea. Some of the most constructive feedback I’ve ever received has been “that is unrescuably bad and you’d do better working on something else”

@engineering_joy @LuciaScience I say this as someone who skipped the post-doc phase and boy has it been hard learning those skills at the same time as building a research program, teaching a heavy course load (for a med school) and multiple service responsibilities.

@engineering_joy @LuciaScience I’ve got really bad news about faculty life. My day is filled with interruption of students, collaborators, or admin needs. Learning how to balance your attention and keep your research going while still in a protected role is a huge benefit of post-doc time.

Maybe overly honest 🌶️ take: I wouldn’t join a lab that required me to be physically present in lab during set hours (other than set meeting times of course). Being a postdoc has very few perks, but flexibility & autonomy are two important ones.

@dfabbri Hey Dan - have done lots of thinking in this space and built initial tooling (ReviewR Shiny App) with lots of ideas for improvement but difficult to fit into my existing research program. Happy to share and/or collaborate if interested!
