Another year of very healthy GCSE numbers would suggest that our KS3 curriculum both engages and challenges our students. Qs like 'What makes a country a country' have certainly helped this cause. Extracts from our 'Power of Geography' scheme for year 9. Who would like a copy?

@Quigley_Becki We currently do a similar sounding unit in Y8. I'd be interested to see how you do this with year 7. Is this their first unit of Geog? If so, how do you integrate key skills they are still very much developing. I'm keen to move away from our Y7 term 1 intro to geog style unit.

I have been waiting to get my teeth into the planning of a completely transformative 'Africa' scheme of work and it is finally coming together! We are asking some BIG questions in this scheme with powerful knowledge front and centre.

@Geography_HOD If it’s been in the last couple of days then I haven’t sent out any emails to the most recent sign ups. Unfortunately it’s not automated it’s just me sending. I’ve been doing them in batches. If it was before then, let me know. Some schools bounce emails if it’s in a big batch

@fiona_616 @AlexStandish9 It really is. I had the same. Second time round I actually felt I was being treated. Hospital were amazing. I was in and out on fluids a fair amount. 1st time round it was 'sickness is a good sign' focus on that! As if it takes two periods of HG for it to be taken seriously!

@Geography_HOD @AlexStandish9 Oh no! It’s awful isn’t it :( I’ve never felt more unwell in my life. Had it in both pregnancies, although second time around I was treated much better my docs and hospital like I wasn’t just in for a bit of sickness and I needed to just deal with it

When you’re looking through your warm coat and realised the last time you wore it was on NEA fieldwork in 2022. I was 17 weeks pregnant, kids didn’t know and I’d only just started to feel like my HG was manageable! Thank goodness!

@fiona_616 @AlexStandish9 It was definitely not ideal. I'd only just started taking one medication, soon to add a few more to that as I went on. School however were fab when I explained what HG was. Still found in had to explain HG time and again when I returned from being off sick 😫 x

@Geography_HOD @AlexStandish9 Oh abroad would be so much worse!!! If we had gone a couple of weeks earlier I’d be asking someone to replace me!! I was on a strong cocktail of anti-sickness meds!

@fiona_616 @AlexStandish9 Oh that's really tough. I remember leading an Iceland trip with my first sd the HG started to kick in. Second time round the HG was so bad I had to delegate the fieldwork :/ Glad it eased for you after such a tough few months.

@AlexStandish9 Hyperemesis gravidarum! I’d basically spent the entire summer that year in and out of hospital on various sickness meds and drips!

@mrfitzhist Oh great, I definitely think it's a step in the right direction. Consistency between working practices in Hist and Geo is great to hear. We do similar. Shall look at PPT for that, currently getting to grips with Canva. Thanks for sharing :)

@Geography_HOD All made on PowerPoint. Our Geography dept use this format as well and have added tweaks that I’ll share after Summer.

One change made this year was how we review classwork. With a focus on reducing workload/increasing impact we gave the ‘Classwork Check Up’ sheet a run. Teacher ticks the relevant statements in each section. Whole class feedback on spelling/wider misconceptions. #historyteacher

In particular I'm looking at improving fieldwork at KS3 and making our KS4 fieldwork more affordable. Currently we coach students to an FSC centre for a rivers day. Coach alone makes trip v expensive, then adding in tuition. Any suggestions @GeogChat? #gcsefieldwork #aqageography
