@gonglei89 All good points I agree with, but the psychological threshold/barrier between military drilling and actual use of force is a real thing. A rusty firing threshold can diminish your ability to deter in a timely and effective manner. PLA academicians have named this concept 和平病.

@GeopoliticalHub That clearly hasn’t been true wrt Taiwan. The PLA is not an inert force. They are quite active in the ECS and SCS and it’s that activity that has made the US and Japan much less certain about their ability to put up a good fight against China.

None of China’s neighbors will be able to get nukes because even for countries on the threshold lead time to initial deterrence is longer than it takes for China to disarm their air defenses and take over their airspace. The power mismatch in the geography today is just unfair.

@gonglei89 Agreed, but decisiveness of action inevitably deteriorates when you haven’t used force in close to 4 decades. This is a purely mechanical observation. The CPC should be thoroughly greasing the wheels on their chain of action to effectively deter a Japanese remilitarization.

@GeopoliticalHub 🤷🏻‍♂️ My point is long term strategic implications of a nuclear Japan initiated by the militaristic right will not be missed by the CCP. They’re far more likely to overreact than underreact, especially since there won’t be any qualms about violence against fellow Chinese ala Taiwan.

@gonglei89 When I said “fired a shot in anger” I was referring to the 1988 赤瓜礁 skirmish which obviously had clear strategic reasons behind it. I’m not advocating for China to do hollow gestures and acts of anger. I’m just saying it’s been a looong time since China last used force.

@GeopoliticalHub You’re not supposed to fire shots in anger. Displays of anger are hollow gestures and strategically meaningless. You either use force or you don’t. China cannot afford permanent damage to its long term security by letting the Japanese right get nukes. They will simply act.

An excellent development. Russia finally seems to be waking up to the revisionist menace that is Japan. There was a time (2000-2010’s) where Putin had wanted to normalize relations with Japan. Not any more. China and Russia should be fully aligned on this front.

This is a really good way to illustrate how f-u Wade-Giles is. It literally sounds like “tai bei” no P sound in Chinese. But in WG you can’t disambiguate between the T and B sounds without some weird marks nobody remembers how to write.
