In a blistering rebuke, a federal judge permanently blocked key parts of Donald Trump’s sweeping anti-voting executive order—calling it not just illegal, but a direct threat to democracy. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly didn’t hedge or mince words. She reminded Trump of a basic civics lesson he’s spent years trying to erase: the President has no authority over election rules. None. Nada. Zero. Zilch. “The Framers of our Constitution recognized that power over election rules could be abused,” she wrote, warning that such power could be used to “disempower the people.” That’s why the Constitution gives that authority to the states and Congress—not to a would-be strongman in the Oval Office. Trump’s executive order tried to do exactly what voter suppression advocates have dreamed of for decades: make it harder to register, harder to stay registered, and easier to quietly block eligible voters—especially students, seniors, low-income Americans, and voters of color.
