@StevenIsserlis When I met him many years ago in a Soho record shop I asked him what was the best recording of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies. He smiled and whispered 'Karajan of course - but don’t tell anyone’…

A typically generous response from HC Robbins Landon to a question I asked him about Haydn's size of orchestra, before I first recorded the concertos (he also supplied the notes). A lesser man would have got a secretary to send a print-out - not he. One of my treasures!

Very proud to share a birthday with La Divina—only wish I could have seen her live. And also with the premières of Saint-Saëns’s ‘Samson et Dalila’ (1877) and beloved Brahms’s 3rd Symphony (1883).

Maria Callas b otd 1923! An extraordinary artist, who gave her all. Famously difficult - but with reason: "To me, the art of music is magnificent, and I cannot bear to see it treated in a shabby way." "I don't know what happens to me on stage. Something else seems to take over."

@GramophoneMag In the early 1990s I had lunch with him and the CEO of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and all he wanted to discuss was his dining room furniture which he had made himself!

David Patrick Stearns offers a profile of Carlos Kleiber, a complex, fascinating conductor and an often prickly character under whose guidance even the greatest of artists would surpass themselves. #Echobox=1763664487" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">gramophone.co.uk/features/artic…

2 December: I have a significant birthday today but it’s also the 1st without my mother & it didn’t feel right to have a big party so soon after her passing. So I’m going to have a quieter celebration with a few friends & go to @wigmore_hall in the evening—a place she also loved.

@houghhough Hello Dear Stephen, My Cortot edition has no metronome markings but perhaps they appear in the Oxford Edition (Edouard Ganche) which gives some of Chopin’s subsequent suggestions to Jane Stirling and other pupils.

The great pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva b 100 years ago today! "The art of music...can help human beings to cope with the tragic losses in life, and bring happiness into their life... Life is limited, but art is eternal.  Music enriches human life and makes people better."

@GeraldKingsle15 @rowenamezzo I had the chance to play the Shostakovich sonata with her at the @wigmore_hall - but being young and stupid, turned it down. I should have cancelled whatever else I had. Many years later, Daniel Shafran was visibly moved when he saw her photo on the wall at the Wigmore.

Hurray! It’s arrived! Straight to the piano to look at @houghhough’s transcription of “My Favorite Things”. The spirit will be there if not necessarily all the notes! And thank you to @GeraldKingsle15 for playing it on Monday! I haven’t stopped humming it since then!

Fascinating evening at Putney Music Society with the amazing @GeraldKingsle15 in conversation with @StevenIsserlis. Exquisite recordings of Edwin Fischer & Julius Isserlis. And to send us off dancing into the night, @houghhough’s sparkling arrangement of “My favourite things”!

Over many decades, Radio Times has featured some wonderful covers, difficult not to keep. This year's, borrowed from Universal Studios, is very, very far from being one of them.

@rowenamezzo @PetrocTrelawny @BBCRadio3 I remember the late pianist Denis Matthews saying when he had performed Bach’s C major 2 Piano Concerto with Edwin Fischer, that after playing Bach with Fischer one might remain an agnostic but could never be an atheist…

Good morning. @BBCRadio3 Breakfast is on air. Early doors, Geoffrey Burgon catches John Le Carré's ear and Edwin Fischer plays Bach. Later Elizabeth Poston provides a festal Te Deum, the BBC Military Band recorded in 1931 and a trio of works by Lili Boulanger. Join us !

@LoveInner Listen to her recording of Schubert’s Die junge Nonne with the great Edwin Fischer. How he produces the sound of the bells on the piano is a miracle!

Soprano Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf died on this day in 2006. She first came to my attention in Karajan’s HMV version of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier and the performance still makes a very strong impression on me. Does Dame Elisabeth’s singing suit your tastes?
