#NowSpinning A fresh Dvořák Symphony No.8 with Libor Pešek in Liverpool. It’s wonderful to hear just how well this conductor and orchestra partnered up for Czech music. There’s a nice spring to this performance. It’s sunny and vital.

@PhilipH17321809 Yes indeed. Written between 1986 and 1991, when Layton’s championship of Nordic music was st its absolute peak. These works might be ‘late’ but they are fresh distillations of Holmboe’s art and an understandable source of faith for Layton.

@LoveInner They were dedicated to the Gramophone critic—and joint author with IM and EG of the Penguin Guide—Robert Layton, who reviewed many of the LP and CD releases of Holmboe's music. RL thought it was reasonably safe to assume that this is music future generations would want to hear.

#NowSpinning music that doesn’t get anything like enough exposure. The two DaCapo discs of Holmboe’s Preludes for Sinfonietta presents them out of order. The first listed is No.10, ‘To the Unsettled Weather’. This is music with infectious zest and glorious transparency. Something very special.

#NowSpinning this sumptuous but oddly soft-centred and un-impactful version of the SS Organ Symphony. Recorded in 1980, it appears to have been the conductor’s only Telarc effort and one of his very few digital recordings. Even the piano barely registers in the finale. Strange!

#NowSpinning Beethoven Symphony No.8 from Kubelík’s complete DG box. This is an interesting cycle, taking in many of the World’s finest orchestras! The different characters bring a lovely sense of variety in sonority, though the conducting itself is pretty consistent.

#OrmandyColumbiaLegacy CD 29 Ravel’s Rapsodie Espagnole and Kodály’s Háry János. Both are sparkling performances. The Ravel is sultry and seductive as well as rhythmically precise, whilst the Kodály is ebullient and irrepressibly fun. The mono sound does almost hide the cimbalom.

#OrmandyColumbiaLegacy CD 28 Haydn Symphonies 88, 92 and 101. Actually, 92 and 101 are conducted by Ormandy and 88 is conducted by Szell. Both conductors bring great joy and animation, with the ‘big band’ approach sounding just right!
