@LoveInner He recorded so much. He's bound to have a few off days. His Third is better than his Fourth on BIS.

Now comparing Neeme Järvi with himself in Sibelius 4. I have to say, the Bis version is not shaping up so well right now. Järvi almost brings things to a standstill several times and the already fragmentary melodic lines disintegrate.

This is a very, very fine Third, at least to my ears. Fabulous balance between character and refinement. So many beautiful moments.

@LoveInner The Bis 4th is the second weakest point of that cycle after the very disappointing 5th. For both symphonies, Jarvi did much better on DG.

@LoveInner It does travel all of the place. A varied sonic palette & experience. My first time hearing it as am trying to listen to more music & composers who are unknown to me.

#NowSpinning Haitink’s 1995 Mahler Festival Mahler 6. I am not in the mood for sleeping right now, but I am in the mood for great music-making. It’s good to hear the Berlin Philharmonic play in a hall other than its own, especially with this level of engagement.

#NowSpinning Beethoven Symphonies 7 and 8 with Abbado in Vienna, on DG. There is another Vienna Seventh, but that's on Decca and coming up soon in the big box. I have to say this big, bold Seventh is floating my boat. It's powerful and gloriously propulsive.

...Harper is chillingly haunting with her contributions. Most impressive of all is the 'Landscape' movement, which explodes spectacularly. All in all this is a very enjoyable Antartica.

...fully underlined. The narrative is very deliberately enhanced by the inclusion of Sir Ralph Richardson's readings of the passages RVW wrote into the score. It's a somewhat hard-edged performance, aligning with the toughness of the movie's subject, it seems. Heather...

…movements. The middle two are better, with a greater sense of unity. I particularly enjoyed the sweep of the fluidly-moving Andante, which rises to a desperately moving climax over several minutes. That movement is simply Haitink at his best. But overall, I wanted more bite.

…biggest plus for me was to hear the orchestra playing in this glorious acoustic, though ultimately the distanced sound did blunt impact. That said, there is also a detectable looseness in the performance itself, which certainly seems to hang fire at points in the outer…

A thread for Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. I am listening through the 811 hours of Mahler in my collection all over again. These threads will record my progress over the - probably - a pretty long time.
