1/ Today the Prime Minister published my AI Opportunities Action Plan for the UK and committed to implement all its recommendations. A quick thread on why this is important, what we need to do now - and how you can help

Boyan says this is 1-2% of global plastic emissions. If it were only 1% and they were able to keep growing at this rate, they'd capture all emissions in 8 years.
Boyan Slat@BoyanSlat

The numbers are in: In 2024, @TheOceanCleanup removed 11,740,000 kg of trash—a 78% year-over-year increase. A big thank-you to everyone who helped make this happen! Now, let’s double this in 2025!

H-1B DATA MEGA-THREAD 🧵 I downloaded five years of H-1B data from the US DOL website (4M+ records) and spent the day crunching data. I went into this with an open mind, but, to be honest, I'm now *extremely* skeptical of how this program works. Here's what I found 👇

Last week, I was invited to give evidence to the UK House of Lords Media Select Committee on the practical ways of scaling AI companies. Many suggestions but one in particular was for the UK to back its own venture scientists and engineers with translational funding.

Pleasure (and daunting) to speak at the @cambridgeunion - brilliant insights and questioning by Irene @scaleupinst - how can the UK scale up more with its technology companies, as data is suggesting it’s much lower the global rankings than can be expected?

@mikebutcher @VishalGulati_ @chalmermagne UAFs (depending on the setup) do help bridge the gap between the science and the market at the early stages, and derisk the product/technology/team to attract x investment. Evidence of this in the US, CH, UK and DE

i) correlation =/= causation - there are some important differences between Imperial and Southampton that aren't connected to UPFs! ii) can we not use Oxford's diabolical setup as an example of good practice?

On the contrary, AI and super computing are two major growth areas that would stimulate investment and economic growth for the UK (especially if we may be entering a global slowdown, we need innovation…) bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

True that it’s one of the most upbeat covers in years by the @TheEconomist — there is genuinely a lot to be optimistic about. It would be good to spread it a bit more 🙏

This week's issue of @TheEconomist goes big on solar A quick thread on everything that's in the issue, which is one of the most exciting, optimistic covers I can remember us running

@OliBarrett Worth trying (and may work). As it would be good to innovate with formats so we can learn what works best for voters. Why not A/B test if we’re looking to be an innovation nation.

📺My format idea for a Leaders' Debate would be this. One hour, two guests, and (here's the bold bit) no moderator. Filmed, seated, no live audience. Host leaves room, re-enters after an hour. Let's see their unmoderated humanity. Big Voter. 💡🔥 #ITVDebate #BigVoter

Watching the UK political debates last night, it occurred to me that both leaders were wooden. Could it be that the format of soundbites & social media has conditioned our politicians to be so (when so many people want to connect with their politicians). We get what we deserve?

Something we encounter a lot at @join_ef is super talented and ambitious people who want to start companies but aren't sure about when to quit their job... That's why @peterfuller23 started Saturday Morning Club... (1/3)

Great discussion with @cnbcKaren & @ArabileG on @CNBC on the importance of universities and how much they are a strategic asset to the UK as well as the fact that Cambridge’s tech ecosystem value is now 18% of the UK’s total. The future is bright for deep tech.
