this girl literally just asked me, and I quote this verbatim: “if me and your ex switched bodies which one would you date and why?”

Iran’s one of the few places where Elite Theory unambiguously applies. The regime can mow down twenty thousand protesters every eighteen months without breaking a sweat but you could theoretically reshape its Parliament entirely by bribing seven people on the Council of Guardians
Bovril-Gesellschaft@BovrilG

The ironic thing is that “regime change” in the sense of the State faction actually in power being swapped out is a lot more plausible now than it was in Jan (the Iranian state is easily capable of putting down popular dissent but is factional to a comic extent and we have no idea who’ll step into the vacuum really)

@JimmyThomist For the countries further away from Russia, e.g. Britain, the small expeditionary forces is what matters. It's still thousands of miles unless you're on the eastern end of the continent.

@JoshFerme It seems like a strange move to loudly and publicly accept that your enemies' arguments are correct, when your plan is to immedeately ignore them. What do they hope to gain through such a statement?

The assertion that they are scrapping non-crime hate incidents is an outright lie. The College of Policing and National Police Chiefs’ Council will be announcing a replacement next week that is just a reformed version of what already exists.
Home Office@ukhomeoffice

Police time will no longer be wasted investigating legal social media posts, freeing up officers to patrol the streets and tackle real crime. By scrapping Non‑Crime Hate Incidents, we are balancing the protection of vulnerable communities while respecting free speech.

It's interesting that Canada isn't particularly repressive even though a third of its police are under the direct control of the federal government. UK's police are controlled by decentralized & elected commissioners, but are far more repressive than Brezhnev.
arctotherium@arctotherium42

Non-US Anglosphere is publicly, explicitly hilariously authoritarian at the state level. UK gets attention because big+low QoL relative to CAN/AUS/NZ, but true of all 4. Doesn't stop people classifying them as liberal democracies or saying liberalism is Anglo Ways of Knowing.

@actsmaniac This is only the case for economic policy. The left substituted victories on social issues for victories on economics. The Democrats in particular very much did *not* play to the centre, they focused hard on their base, and mostly downplayed economic issues (except Obamacare).

elections are usually won in the center, this even goes for center-right parties, the CDU under Merkel got very good election results by taking up all the space in the center. what has been forgotten is that center-left parties also went more centrist in the 90s and early 2000s simply because they were losing elections and wanted to become more competitive. and it did work, they got big mandates under politicians like Blair, Clinton and Schröder.
