What began with the European Coal and Steel Community on 18 April 1951 became: 🇪🇺 The freedom to live, work, study and travel across borders. 🇪🇺 The Single Market connecting millions of European businesses and citizens. 🇪🇺 The euro, the world’s second most important currency. 🇪🇺 The strongest rights and protections for our people. 75 years later, the European Union continues to be shaped every day - as a Union of opportunity, stability and solidarity for millions of Europeans. And it all started with a bold vision and a choice: cooperation over conflict.

As Robert Schuman predicted, the European Union was not made all at once or according to a single plan. It has been built through concrete achievements that created a real sense of solidarity. And we have seen it time and again: enlargements, the euro, Schengen - and the list goes on. Signed exactly 75 years ago, the Treaty of Paris created the European Coal and Steel Community. Pooling these key resources made war materially impossible and laid the foundations for European integration. The European Union we know today is the living legacy of that choice.
