For years, adtech has obsessed over targeting: who to reach, when to reach them, and how efficiently we can do it. And it worked. Metrics looked great on paper. But in that chase for precision, we forgot the person on the other side of the screen. Somehow “ads are annoying” became a universal truth we all just accepted. Advertisers know it. We talk a lot about targeting, personalization, optimization, but somewhere along the way, we forgot the biggest shift in advertising happened when people got control of the remote. Linear TV guaranteed attention because viewers had no choice. Streaming changed everything. Now people decide when, where, and what they watch, and they expect ads to fit into their experience, not interrupt it. 99% of U.S. households pay for at least one streaming service. Viewers aren’t captive anymore. They’re choosing the content, and whether they engage with ads at all. That means the formats have to evolve. Native, contextual formats like product placement, virtual signage, pause ads, squeeze backs, and in-scene media work because they belong. They feel integrated, not intrusive.
