Sources believe LeBron James is slow-playing his decision to see if any of his suitors can find a way to land Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving. The problem is that AD and Kyrie don't seem available for trade. More on LeBron's choices on @YahooSports: sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/th…

How much does the NBA change over in 5 years????? None of the 30 NBA teams have more than 4 players left from the 2021-22 rosters Only 12 teams have more than ONE player left. And only six coaches from 2021-22 too (Carlisle, Spoelstra, Finch, Daigneault, Kerr, Lue)

This is actually a reasonable budget for a well-off family of four living in an expensive city and sending its kids to private school. But it's weird to say that you're ending up with barely nothing every month when you're saving almost $50,000 a year.
Sam ⚔️ Financial Samurai@financialsamura

So you think earning $408,000 a year is a lot of money? After working 50+ hours a week, being stressed out of your mind, and barely seeing your kids, it might not be the dream income you imagined. Look how quickly the money goes. $1/month left over. What would you cut?

The funniest part of this LeBron watch has been watching Heat fans convince themselves that a social media intern accidentally made LeBron’s introductory press conference public. That’s the level of desperation we’re dealing with.

College reputation seems almost impossible to change, but Vanderbilt has done it. In 2005, Vanderbilt admitted 34% of applicants, and its middle 50% SAT range was 1280–1460. Today, it admits under 5%, with a middle 50% SAT range of 1510–1560. They are opening a San Francisco campus for 1000 full-time students next year, and Jensen Huang just donated $75M to the campus They moved from being compared mainly with the likes of Emory and Georgetown to competing directly for students with Northwestern and Duke. Very smart how they did it, definitely some lessons that apply broadly: • They recruited aggressively at Northeastern prep schools and top high schools nationwide... the chancellor would visit the schools that sent the most students to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown and Penn (ALWAYS GET ON THE PLANE!) • Built relationships with influential college counselors, so Vanderbilt would appear on the same recommended lists as the Ivies and Duke • Specifically decided to attract Jews (the chancellor decided that Jewish students would strengthen the university’s intellectual life) by building out more Jewish life (Hillel center, kosher dining, Jewish studies program)... and it also helped shed the image of a traditional, insular Southern school dominated by white Christian fraternities • Used generous need-based aid and merit scholarships to win students from more prestigious schools • Sold a distinctive product: elite academics, SEC sports, a strong social scene and a real campus experience • Turned Nashville from a perceived drawback into a major recruiting advantage as the city became more attractive Other universities that I think have done a good job in recent decades are Northeastern and USC. Before that NYU and Duke.
New York Magazine@NYMag

Over the last few years, Vanderbilt has become one of the most desired and admired schools in the country. At a time when only 42 percent of Americans say they have a lot of confidence in higher education, and as other schools face a spate of crises — an increasingly antagonistic White House, the existential threat of AI, administrative uncertainty about how to handle student protests — the university has emerged as a bit of an apolitical fantasy land. It accepted just 2.9 percent of regular-decision applicants, and although its overall acceptance rate won’t be available until late August, a university official said it’s expected to be about 4.8 percent, which would make Vanderbilt almost as hard to get into as Yale was last year. And in about a month, the university will take over most of a city block in Chelsea, which will allow roughly 90 undergraduates to “study abroad” in New York, interning for such beloved local institutions as JPMorgan and McKinsey. “I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s on 85 percent of my students’ lists,” said Christopher Rim, a college-admissions consultant who works primarily with the ultrawealthy in Manhattan. “It’s the Ivies, MIT, Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt.” Claire Suddath reports on how Vanderbilt’s reputational makeover — making the school less fancy and southern, and considerably more selective and popular — has been in the works for decades: nymag.visitlink.me/0-qXtT

LeBron didn't do a press conference until media day when he joined the Lakers. When he went back to Cleveland, he did an event at the University of Akron hosted by his foundation, but it came in August. I haven't looked into the validity of this but I'm immediately skeptical.

The Miami Heat’s official YouTube channel had LeBron’s introductory press conference scheduled for July 27 🤔 (h/t @WadexFlash / bing.com/videos/search?…)

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey may be the most pro-Western civilization film Hollywood has made in decades - not because it flatters the Greeks, but because it understands civilization as a moral achievement rather than an ethnic possession. The identitarian far-left and far-right share a premise: that the Western canon is ethnic property. One side condemns it on that basis; the other guards it on the same basis. Nolan refuses the premise, populating Homer's world with various identities while treating the story with absolute seriousness. That’s not a repudiation of the canon but evidence of its triumph: Homer can be inhabited by, and speak to, anyone. The film’s deepest commitment is to individual moral agency. Odysseus cannot hide behind Greece, military orders, or victory. His choices are his own, and so is his guilt. No collective cause dissolves individual moral responsibility; his final heroism lies not in conquest, but atonement. That principle extends to hospitality: treat the stranger as you would wish to be treated. When the Greeks violate it, they become the barbarians they fear. Penelope's devastating realization - "You're the people from the sea" - underscores that the enemies of civilization are sometimes its self-appointed defenders, exempting themselves from the principles they claim to uphold. This is Western civilization at its best - not an ethnicity or a triumphalist myth, but a tradition built around the dignity of the individual, moral responsibility, and atonement. And a civilization strong enough to preserve stories that judge its own heroes remains a civilization worth defending.
