The real issue is ʿaqīdah - and this is not a minor jurisprudential (fiqhī) disagreement that scholars debate within the fold of Islam. This is a matter of foundational belief. The Rāfiḍah hold that all the Ṣaḥābah - except approximately seven - are kuffār. Think about what this means: the very men and women who carried the Qurʾān to us, who transmitted every ḥadīth we rely on, who fought at Badr, Uḥud, and Khandaq - declared disbelievers. Among those they condemn are companions explicitly promised Jannah by the Prophet ﷺ himself, including ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه). Beyond this, they accuse Āʾishah (رضي الله عنها) - the Mother of the Believers - of zinā. This is not merely an insult to her honour. It is a direct contradiction of the Qurʾān, in which Allāh declared her innocence (Sūrat al-Nūr, 24:11-20). To persist in that accusation after divine acquittal is to reject the word of Allāh. It is for these reasons - not political rivalry or sectarian tribalism - that the scholars of the Ummah have historically reached a consensus that the beliefs of the Rāfiḍah place them outside the pale of Islam. One important distinction worth noting: the Zaydīs, a branch of Shīʿa predominantly found in Yemen, do not generally share these beliefs. They do not declare the Ṣaḥābah kuffār, nor do they hold the extreme positions described above. So no - this is not a “theological difference” in the way that Shāfiʿīs and Ḥanafīs differ on raising hands in ṣalāh. This is ʿaqīdah. And ʿaqīdah is where the line is drawn.
