19 books recommended by @dcsandbrook in the Times today. All worth buying. Problem is, once I've done that, there's no money left for other people's presents! Thanks Mr Sandbrook.

Several reports in today's papers, including @thetimes (@tompeck's excellent sketch) about the @BBC view of its own crisis. Terrific to see that Nick Robinson and Robbie Gibb are replaying their old Conservative Youth enmities. Clearly no water flowing under that bridge!

@CapelLofft It is those preconceptions that I am particularly keen to see challenged.

Delighted to have received this perk up to a grey day, and what a brilliant opening line. Was prompted by a tweet over the weekend referencing a much lesser book. Thanks @CapelLofft

150,000 civilians killed in a brutal war. 9 million displaced. And now With the world’s attention focused on crises elsewhere, Sudan’s war-induced famine is growing in what used to be productive farmlands. wsj.com/world/africa/s…

@holland_tom And I see one of the execs at SiriusXM said he was a recently acquired addict to your podcast. Expecting a transfer request any time soon?!!

Great episode from @dcsandbrook @holland_tom @TheRestHistory on Peter the Great and good to see them hewing closely to R J Unstead's definitive chapter in "Some King's and Queens"! His closing judgement is particularly shrewd. Sorry he wasn't quoted.

I am now looking forward to the "Adventures in Time" Cold War installment.

@dcsandbrook describes the Cold War book I've been recommending for years as "sensationally boring". Just hope my students don't read this and bust my credibility wide open!

That extraordinary Trump, Vance, Zelensky meeting reminds me of nothing so much as Jack Nicolson in A Few Good Men. "I would rather you just said thanjyou and went on your way"!

Tom Wilson played Biff in BACK TO THE FUTURE and was fed up of fans asking the same questions so wrote a very funny song about it.

This is an excellent response to the ridiculous Domimic Cummings interview at the weekend. Cummings rails against the same system he so readily walked in behind without question when it wanted to lock us all up out of fear & refused to listen to others. thetimes.com/article/8acce5…

I've read stories this morning about police failures to pursue burglaries & police/transport officers merely watching fare dodgers in action. London doesn't have to be a criminal city. But it needs law enforcement agencies who want to do their job, not stand by helplessly.

Hilary Mantel didn't do her research for Wolf Hall very well. I literally only read half a page on Wikipedia about Oliver Cromwell and I could tell she got everything wrong! Overrated.

@stoneman_claire @michaeldoron You have phrased this much more diplomatically than I would but it is an important post, thankyou. In sum, if people are passionate about teaching, and think they understand the issues surrounding it and think they can do it effectively - then they should be in the classroom.

1/3 2024 was a busy year so I didn’t blog as often. I really enjoyed it when I did. Here are my top three most popular posts. Third was this post. It’s about teachers leaving teaching but, perhaps, not leaving the sector. We’d love you to come back birminghamteacher.wordpress.com/2024/02/17/wed…

This definitely scratched a long running itch. @OldRoberts953 fires a few well aimed, nicely sharpened arrows at the self-regarding dumbing down of our society. The home of once awe inspiring artistry and splendor now just hectors us all with cartoons. spectator.co.uk/article/world-…

Wonderful article - as so often - from @j_amesmarriott - about the trivialisation of knowledge and the need for a return of the autodidact. Some fascinating observations about our forebears' intellectual curiosity puts us to shame today. thetimes.com/article/a496c4…

Well, we have no plans to leave this platform nor to post on any new emerging alternative. We can't all do everything, as Ovid sang. We're *very* grateful to the community that has come to follow us here and to share the essays of our wonderful roster of writers. Omnibus gratias!

Essex Police effectiveness across crimes that harm people now coming under close scrutiny, and it's not doing them any favours.

The pompous Essex Police response here that they act "without fear or favour" is doubtless designed to show themselves as heroic fighters for the law. Not so impressive when set against their shocking record of not investigating crimes that matter. thetimes.com/article/5e039d…
