Police received information about suspected drugs concealed in an alley behind a local bakery. The information was immediately operationalised. Through further investigation, police followed up on additional leads, which led them to a flat where the suspect had allegedly been seen. The suspect was searched, and police allegedly found drugs, as well as an undisclosed amount of cash, in his possession. He was immediately arrested for allegedly dealing in drugs. The suspect is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Monday, 6 July 2026, on a charge of dealing in drugs. Attached are photographs of the seized exhibits.

IPID Confirms the Arrest of a Suspended EMPD Officer Over the Alleged R15 Million Killarney Precious Stones Theft as Two More Suspects Are Hunted The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested one suspect in connection with the alleged unlawful seizure and theft of precious stones valued at just under R15 million from a private residence in Killarney, Johannesburg, in 2023. The arrest comes after explosive evidence about the alleged scheme emerged before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in recent weeks. IPID said three warrants of arrest were obtained on Friday, 3 July 2026, but by 12:30 on Saturday only one suspect had been arrested. Members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) are continuing to search for the remaining two suspects, while a sixth suspect implicated in the investigation has since died. The arrested suspect is being held at the Edenvale holding cells and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, 6 July. The investigation initially implicated six people: three EMPD officers, one Gauteng Traffic Police officer, one JMPD officer attached to the VIP Unit and a private businessman accused of impersonating a police officer during the raid. IPID alleges the group searched the Killarney home without a warrant, seized the precious stones and failed to register them in the SAPS occurrence book. Some of the exhibits were later allegedly found in the vehicle of an EMPD officer. The case gained national attention after protected witness "Witness K", a JMPD officer, testified before the Madlanga Commission that the operation had been staged under the guise of a lawful police raid. She admitted her involvement in the plot and alleged that the stones, valued at about R14.9 million, were later sold for R110,000, with the money allegedly shared among those involved. She also testified that there was no authorised joint operation between EMPD and JMPD. Those allegations remain contested, and those implicated deny wrongdoing. IPID said the suspects face corruption charges because EMPD officers allegedly conducted an investigation outside their jurisdiction. The watchdog also questioned the involvement of the Gauteng Traffic Police officer and the JMPD VIP Unit officer, noting that neither performs criminal investigations as part of their official duties. Although the arrests followed the public testimony at the Madlanga Commission, IPID said its investigation into the Killarney case has been underway since 2023 and was not initiated by the commission. The search for the remaining suspects is continuing, with further arrests expected in the coming weeks as the investigation progresses.

The community wants to close the spaza shops, but a South African woman claims she is married to a Somalian man and the shop is in her name. Now, how do we handle this fraud and corruption when the woman is unaware of the new law?

Somalians refuse to close their spaza shop in Kasi, claiming they want to negotiate with the locals. Police officers are torn because, as the Somalians have stated, they are not going anywhere and are protected by the government. "Even if the situation is unbearable, we'd rather stay back here in South Africa than going back home,"—African Diaspora Forum Says Somali Migrants Will Not Return Home as Thousands of Illegal Immigrants Leave SA African Diaspora Forum (ADF) chairperson Amir Sheikh says many Somali migrants would rather remain in South Africa than return to Somalia despite ongoing anti-illegal immigration protests. His remarks come as thousands of illegal immigrants are leaving the country following demonstrations calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa. Sheikh said the African Diaspora Forum is a federation of migrant associations representing 42 nations, with most members from the African continent, as well as representatives from Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. He said the organisation was formed after the 2008 xenophobic attacks, during which more than 100,000 migrants were displaced, adding that, "18 years down the lane, we are also having a similar situation." He said the circumstances facing Somali migrants differ from those of people from neighbouring countries because returning to Somalia is not a viable option. "Even if the situation is unbearable, we'd rather stay back here in South Africa than going back home," Sheikh said. He described Somalis as a peace-loving community that trusts South African law enforcement and welcomed the security deployment during the recent demonstrations. Sheikh said Somali business owners would close their shops if they knew protest marches were passing through areas such as Mayfair to avoid confrontation. "We'll make sure the businesses are actually closed for that day," he said, adding that protesters should be allowed to exercise their democratic constitutional rights freely while law enforcement maintains order.
