The United National Party (UNP) has condemned what it described as a sudden visit by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to the residence of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to record a statement from his wife, Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe.
UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said the party was saddened by the move, noting that Wickremesinghe is currently recovering after undergoing heart surgery.
He said Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe has been overseeing the former President’s health and wellbeing during his recovery period, adding that visitors and political engagements had been limited to protect his health.
Abeywardena also claimed that Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe herself has been unwell for a prolonged period.
Questioning whether it was appropriate for CID officers to suddenly arrive at the residence under such circumstances, he said the party wanted to know who had instructed such action.
He further alleged that there were concerns the move may have been intended to divert attention from accusations currently being levelled against the government.
The UNP said it did not approve of obtaining a statement in such a manner and strongly condemned the action, particularly at a time when both occupants of the residence were said to be unwell.
Earlier today, reports said the CID had visited the former President’s residence in Colombo and recorded a statement from Prof. Maithree Wickremesinghe, reportedly in connection with an inquiry into allegations that government funds were misused during Wickremesinghe’s tenure as President to facilitate travel to London for a university degree awarding ceremony.
