There are many who stereotype the homeless as junkies and miscreants. The truth is many are there because of trauma. Met a wonderful sister today I will call Jay. She broke down crying after I asked if she was okay sitting in the hot sun. I asked her how she got to Skid Row. In my asking, I was looking to find out if she had been dumped or just came from another part of the state or country. The answer I got was heartbreaking. As if she needed to get something off her chest. She told me several years ago, in the span of two weeks, her daughter was murdered, her mother passed as they were planning her funeral and on the day of her daughter’s service her grandmother passed. I knew she was telling the truth. Not one muscle in her face moved as a went silent for a second. But tears flowed down as if someone barely turned on a faucet. It was like her tears just burst through the numbness. She was never the same and turned to crack to escape. In just a few short months, it became the center of her world. She lost everything. She asked me to pray for her. I did. She said she wanted help. The rest of this story is between her, me and God. I have heard many origin stories in skid row. Yes there are people there who completely screwed up in life. Then there are those who life kicked them in the gut. This is why patience is so importance with many on the street. Please pray for Ms. Jay.
