They always hated us. Ever been there? I worked up there a cumulative over a year, employing over 1000, interacting with probably 3X. They have always had this passive aggressive, unearned moral and intellectual superiority complexes. Complete assholes. They always whine " we have been your best trading partner and ally for generations"! Bullshit. They have been terrible at each- it just looks like that from up there since they get all the benefits.

The interties were set up initially to provide more stability to the Canadian grid, and Canada agreed to be part of NERC and FERC to regulate the utilities. We have always been back and forth as for as KW, but Canada's grids, except maybe Ontario, rely on the US grid for voltage and frequency support- resiliency. Cut it off and get some wild blackouts. The US has been an exporter to BC for years, and an importer from Ontario's hydros, but not much, and often we are exporting. In January, during the cold snap, Ontario imported 2TWhr of electricity in 48 hours when they had an issue. Overall Canada has become a net importer of electricity from the US for the last year or so. When talking about "cutting off the US" whether it is electricity, oil or potash, it might cause temporary issues in the US, but not much. In the meantime it means zero revenue for Canada's biggest income producers.

Let's stop sending potash, aluminum, and electricity to the US and see what happens.

That's the way he wants to play? 70% of Canadian exports go to the U.S. Trade with the U.S. represents 35-40% of Canadian GDP, but only 2.5-3% of U.S. GDP. For the U.S., losing trade with Canada would look like a moderate recession. For Canada, it would be Great Depression Part 2.

The 400 wrongful votes cast in New Jersey for president had no impact on the 2020 result. Biden won the Garden State in a rout with a margin of more than 700,000 votes. Still, it is just substantive enough to refuel the president’s obsession with “rigged elections.”

It is not just banking and dairy. They have protected oligopolies in banking, insurance, all of the agriculture sector, not just dairy, telecom, internet, media, rail, airlines, insurance, and others. Under USMCA, and NAFTA before that, they were supposed to open these markets but never have. All of their interprovincial trade barriers, which the Bank of Canada says costs Canada 7-8% of their GDP, all exist with the US (and every other country), multiplied. All of their companies in these sectors are free to operate in the US. Every week they are announcing subsidies to many of their industries, but especially to their manufacturing - which was one way they lured steel, aluminum and autos to close in the US and open in Canada starting in the 90's. Algoma steel alone has gotten nearly a $1B, in the last 4 years. They get reduced electricity rates. This is straight out of China stuff. On USMCA, they have been cheating on that for years, and NAFTA before that. Why? It was only a 2% penalty if there goods were non-compliant. In 2024, they were only 35% compliant and that only went up to 53% in 2025 when there were actual penalties. It takes a long time and a lot of effort to bring products into compliance. For contrast, Mexico was at nearly 90%. They saw an increase in exports to the US of 6.6% while Canada's fell by 5.5% in 2025. So, when Canadians whine that "Trump started this", they ignore what has been going on for 30-40 years. And that is not even beginning the discussion on their complete failure as a military/ security partner. They also whine that "we have been your best trading partner and best ally for decades". It only looked that way from Canada's perspective.

Watching Canadians committing financial seppuku is something to behold. The fact is that upwards of 76% of Canada's exports go to the US, while the other way around, it's 10% of ours that go to Canada. This 100% means that they're far more reliant on our markets than vice versa... and we're still getting the short end of the stick. The fact is that they've long enjoyed easy access to the US market while imposing stiff tariffs or limits on things like US dairy/farm products, alcohol, and banking. The latter is impt as Canada is HEAVILY reliant on US banks (and many of their banks operate in the US). At the same time, Canada greatly restricts US banks from offering services and from doing business there. This is what makes the relationship imbalanced and "abusive" inasmuch as they've been taking advantage of the imbalance to the tune of at least $80 billion p/yr - and that's why Trump asserts that we're subsidizing their country. I'm sorry to break it to people who are slow on the uptake. That's a BIG number, and why Trump has sought to negotiate a fair deal. Fair as in it's mutually beneficial, not overly favoring one side as it is now. Oh, and let's not forget that they're essentially reliant on our military investments here to keep them safe, something they pay nothing for. And that's impt as it allows them not to spend their own money on their own defense. This relationship, as it stands, is insulting. They're taking advantage of the United States. And as much as they're throwing a tantrum now, pretending that they're in the right, I have zero doubt they'll eventually capitulate. The only question is how much pain is the current Canadian Govt going to insist on their citizens enduring in the interim.

The US isn't perfect. And manufacturing jobs will never be what they once were - that is not how manufacturing works these days. I was a field engineer and in the 80's you might have 2000-3000 people working in a brewery or steel mill, and now more is put out at higher quality with hundreds.
