Ronda's first New Bridge across its famous chasm was built in 1735. It only took 8 months to build, but collapsed after 6 years, killing 50 people. Its more famous successor opened in 1793 - complete with a small room in the central arch that served as a prison & torture chamber.

A glorious courtyard setting for dinner at Hotel La Casa del Califa in Vejer in Andalucia. Breakfast here in the Spanish sunshine is even better.

The Drunk Stick tree. If - while drunk - you hug this tree, you will immediately sober up, thanks to all the spikes on the trunk

The tower on the left is one of 133 watch-towers in the ancient city of Cadiz. The harbour was often full & ships could not enter. So merchants used flags to exchange messages with the ships & buy part cargoes that were then brought ashore in smaller boats.

The streets of Cádiz are crowded & the corners were prone to damage from horse-drawn carts. Redundant canons & metal decorative panels were often put in place to protect the walls.

Last night on Miércoles Santo (Holy Wednesday), four major religious brotherhoods (cofradías) held their (very slow) penitential processions through the gridlocked streets of Cádiz.

#Reform Councillor David Taylor JAILED. "nasty and violent". "told his wife he would hunt her like prey and kill her, and that he would "put her in the boot and set fire to the car". And STILL he was 'vetted' & 'approved' by #Reform as a candidate while this was all going on.

@Redrichmond2 There are undoubtedly some frustrations to be faced when living in Portugal. But in terms of work-life balance & overall quality of life, I rate it considerably higher than the UK or US.

Would you like to choose where your tax payments go? Portugal lets taxpayers choose from a list of 4500 charitable, religious, cultural & environmental institutions to which 1% of their income tax is automatically allocated. Sounds like a good idea to me.

What do you do with a tumbledown building in the town centre? Take off the roof, knock a hole in the wall, and create a free car park, of course.
